: : Well kids, I keep thinking this RC has surprised me for last time (& it hasn't even begun!) then some new news reaches me ,from or regarding, yet another rollerskater who's come out of the woodwork for my little event here in Vegas.
: : 1st confirmed RC Virgin was Biff, whom I look forward to skating AND hanging with GREATLY.:) Then Tim Altec.Good..good. Strong rumors of Fred Blood. Pretty Sweet.
: : And now,one near AND dear to My Heart.....
: : My Old Man. Yes. My Dad. He's an Old School Rollerskater (Parallel!! HElls Yeah! LOL!) who actually broke his knee in a pool in late 70's ( Rectors really sucked for protection). He's got a metal knee cap. They told him he'd NEVER run again or walk without a cane when it happened. He was not only doing BOTH those things, he was skating 13 foot concrete again within 6 months. But parks died in Michigan (my home state) in late 70's & he hung up his sk8s.
: : Well, he's coming out for RC...actually almost a week before RC & he wants to SK8!! We're gonna hit a park or 2 Pre-RC to let him get his sk8 legs back, but he's in good shape & the equipments MUCH better today than it was back in the Day.
: : So, he'll turn 62 less than a week after RC. I think, if he ends up skating, he'll handily take Oldest Skater of the Year Props. :) I'm Stoked. All my friends. All those girlies :) & my Dad too. It is gonna be Crazy.
: : Anyway, here's a pic circa '78 or '79 (maybe I can get Dad on Forum to testify to date himself), actually a scanned series of pics of Dad. One he's in an Invert, another he's falling on failed invert. Res is bad, sorry , but these ARE pretty old. No digital cams in the Day!

:
: Let's not let expectations get too high just yet, Jay has remained upright on the 4 wheeled roadrash shoes for a lot longer than I did. That having been said, I am really ready for RC madness to start. Biffsk8er is right about the rectors and knee high socks - and the dive, think it was a 8.7 or 8.8 on the judges cards. Guess you had to have been a survivor of the 60s to understand the bizarre yet somehow strangely attractive fashion of the 70s. The pants were rectors too with inserts that could withstand shocks of up to 2 mph if you didn't land on anything hard.
:
: The skates available over the counter were really suckey so we made our own. Take a perfectly good pair of Bauer hockey skates, cut off the blade then cannibalize a skateboard for wheel and trucks and - PRESTO - you were rolling fat. My brother and I played on a traveling roller hockey team from about 1975 to 1980 something and Jay saw more than a few terrific fights mixed into hours of mediocre hockey. Remind me to tell you about the infamous incident between the brothers Cloetens and the brothers Hanson ( no,no,no not those Hanson brothers, think Paul Newman in Slapshot).
:
: Can't wait to see my new Grandson, my wonderful Daughter in law and my Boy and to meet everyone. I especially look forward to meeting Fred, I was just out of surgery and still hospitalized from a mishap during an exhibition skate in a figure 8 bowl ( 5' on the shallow end 16' the deepness ) so the wife took Jay to see Fred skate an cop some face time with his hero.
:
: Oh yeah, ask me about the 3 hours 2 crane 11 fireman with ropes and a basket removal of yours truly from the deep end after the "incident". I might not be able to hang with the radical vert skaters but I got stories galore. AND, they're from so long ago, nobodys around to dispute facts which, as my Dad always said, can really screw up a good story.
:
: See you in Vegas
: The OG

I'm so stoked to meet you! And I can't wait to see your grandson, too!
Wow, 3 generations... and who knows? In a few years you could have a 3-gen skate team, cuz i'm sure Ryder's gonna be a lil' ripper, it's in the dna. Can't wait. Be there soon.

Jay, that is so awesome. I used to skate parking garages with my dad and play hockey. After he broke his shoulder skiing many many years ago, he stopped all of that. The poor guy can't even play golf because his body is so broken. I really want to go to RC, but don't think it will happen.

That is superb having your father get back on skates after all these years, and then to join you at such a special time of the year.
I really would love to attend, but times are tough here. Spending $60 on skate parts to get myself back into the park is a luxury at this point, but I see it as necessary since skating is about the only way I can get motivated to exercise. I'm pretty much keeping Claudine company in her loneliness at this point in time and missing out on the gathering.
Hopefully next year things will be better, and maybe by that time I will be able to perform something worth watching.

So that is why you posted those pics last night on your photobucket account!!?? Good ol' Dad is coming to town! And..dare I add....rumors of Fred Blood!!! That was what I was thinking you meant after the hints the other night. I would so love to meet Fred!

He organized a Woodward skate a couple of years ago, and I got hurt right before it was to happen. I 'SO' wanted to go to that!!! This would be amazing for me to meet these guys. Your Dad included.

Wow. I am not missing this for the world.

Yeah. I know. My 1st memory of vertical skating (& 1 of the 1st memories I REALLY remember AT ALL) is of seeing Fred & my old man skating in this pool (which to my 7 year old ass looked bottomless) back in Michigan in late 70's. Fred actually came to the hospital when my Dad was in there with broken knee. Old man's supposed to be finding pic of me, him & Fred from WAY back in the Day. Should be cool.
I'm really looking forward to meeting you, Bro. Re-meeting Fred. Tim Altec. Already have the whole Dying Breed Crew this year. SO Awesome.
Think I'm gonna try to sk8 today. Light hour session on a 4' Spine. I think it'll give me decent oppurtunity to test range of motion w/o much risk of exacerbating knee issue. I hope.
So, you'll be here on Thursday 7/30, right?? I mean HERE skating? I'm still trying to work out logistics of getting us vert-dogs to Wagon Wheel (WW).
Wagon Wheel Pools

It's mostly a timing/HEAT issue. Only potential times really would be Thursday or Friday AFTER scheduled parks (Thursday we're 5 minutes away, but Friday's other side of town.....30 min or better) or during day when noone would wanna sk8. So.... wanna make sure big dogs are gonna be in town for that. If I can schedule it.
I know Duke & Des won't be here til Fri. Irene, Lee & myself will be here from start. Don't know when Tim and/or Fred will be here.
So, stil trying to cross a couple T's & dot a couple I's, but it's coming together nicely. :)

You guys all Rock. I only wish we ALL could get together. One of these days we'll make it happen. Maybe find a geographically equ-distant point from all of us: The Aussies, The Europeans & The Americans & just make it happen. Somewhere with pools AND vert ramps!! Yeah.
Robert & BH, there's no way carpooling/hotel sharing etc. would facilitate getting BOTH of you guys out this year?! BH, we're looking for participation (as my kind Brother Duke always tells me) not competition. I'm sure you've got plenty going on to watch already. Trust me, once you're around a few other skaters you're just gonna be amped to sk8 & spectate. It's all good.
I hope everybody has a Great weekend filled with epic skating.
2 weeks from today is the day I'm REAllY looking forward to. Area 702 ALL TO OURSELVES & then my 40th Party & much Absinthe. Look out.
PEACE. Jay

Let's not let expectations get too high just yet, Jay has remained upright on the 4 wheeled roadrash shoes for a lot longer than I did.

The skates available over the counter were really suckey so we made our own. Oh yeah, ask me about the 3 hours 2 crane 11 fireman with ropes and a basket removal of yours truly from the deep end after the "incident". I might not be able to hang with the radical vert skaters but I got stories galore. AND, they're from so long ago, nobodys around to dispute facts which, as my Dad always said, can really screw up a good story.

See you in Vegas

: See you in Vegas
: The OG

Alright, Everybody.
Now, you probably think you know where I get my verbose literative nature, right? LOL. Probably true.
With paternal confirmation not just to me, but here on the Revered Vert Forum, I figured I better get gear organized so I know what we've got AND what we need.
On a tangential, funny note, I just noticed this post's Capthcha is "maladies un-" I Fervently hope that we ALL suffer from "maladies un-" not just for RC but for all of '09!
Anyway, back to gear. I've got everything for me & my Dad save a pair of elbow pads. I'll pick those up today after my session & we're all set.
Check it out, Dad. Even extra sets of padded shorts. The black ones actually have hard plastic external shells as well as pads. They're rated for at least 5 mph semi-hard surface contacts!
RC 09 Gear for me & Dad 1

Front-View showing SK8 selection better. Any you like, Dad, but you'll probably prefer either of 2 pair on right.

RC 09 Gear for me & Dad 2. Sk8s aplenty!

And lest the rest of you Rollers think this was solely for Pops, have you checked all your gear? I found an extra set of Protec Knee pads I'd forgotten I'd ever had!
Also, I want RC attendees to know that being the 'Native' I'm prepared & will have coolers with icy cold bottles of H2O for skaters & familes. We don't need anyone dropping from heatstroke. Not on My watch. Nothing fancy, but it'll do. Also, one night (probably Friday Hollywood Full-Pipe action) we're gonna do a little B-Cue for the Vert Crew & hangers on. Again, nothing fancy, burgers, dogs, etc. Just a little "thanks for coming" from Dawnie, Ryder & I.
Alright, Kids. That's it. I'm going to SK8 right after Lunch & see how this knee's really doing. It's supposed to be 112 today again. That's why all the tour times are after dark. I'll accept all positive healing energies & Chi from my Peeps. Thanks.

Thanks, Brother. I believe your Chi did the trick. I actually did NOT make it to the park yesterday, but DID make it to the gym. Treadmill & leg presses & swimming all indicating good progress on knee. We're having Freak Vegas Rain today, so no skating, but this tuesday's "Old DUde's Night" @ Area 702 will see this old rollerskater hitting it. Can't wait to see what you're going to do......
I return your Chi to you. With Gratitude. And interest Chi.

Sounds cool! I cannot wait to go swimming soon. I haven't been for at least 3 weeks. The heat here is pretty unbearable with an extreme drought in our area. We have had at least 45 days of triple digit temps here already.

Thanks for sending the Chi back, and glad it helped. I do need it now, as I went on a bike ride today and I felt my knee twinge a little bit. The same one that recently had the quad tendon operation. (I'm starting to sound like Claudine)

Cheers!
Biff

ireNe: Oldest Skater....so far...;) (20. Jul. 2009 05:50)
Wow, 3 generations... and who knows? In a few years you could have a 3-gen skate team, cuz i'm sure Ryder's gonna be a lil' ripper, it's in the dna. Can't wait. Be there soon.
