Some Stall Tutorials I did for my Dad...

Hey Everybody.
I made a couple of videos for my Dad to help him with stalls. I hadn't intended to post them here. But after some exchanges with Claudine & Beer Hunter earlier today I decided to post them here after all.
I apologize for the formatting, they WERE done specifically for my Father though.
Anyway, here they are. Hope they're beneficial to somebody.

Tutorial # 1:

Tutorial # 2:

And lastly something from a park I only discovered/heard of last week. Apparently they've been in town about 5 months, but it was News to me! Anyway, since I had Dawnie (& Ryder) with me for a Change I thought I'd have Dawn take some Stills since I can't do that on my own. What follows is a compilation of those sequenced shots along with some close-ups of my sk8s for what I call "T-Stalls". I think these are easiest FIRST stall to learn for a couple reasons.
1: You can either stall on deck, coping or inside ramp.
2: You're partially turned into ramp for re-entry already.

Anyway, here it is:

Well, that's it, Kids. Like I said, they were made for my Dad, so forgive the personalization. I hope this helps/amuses whatever.
Claudine, DO NOT GO SKATING YET!!!!! PLEASE!!!!
BH, hope you can benefit somehow. If you get the chance to sk8 with Biff & Raven, Do it!. Those guys RIP & they're cool peeps.
Now, I'm going to get my Ass motivated to go sk8! But where should I go?? Anthem?? Killer, but probably overrun with Groms on 2 wheels right about now. Area 702? Also Killer, but a long drive to sk8 a hot vert ramp by myself. New park (Showtime) nnot much for me to play on besides the mini....hmmmmm.....decisions....decisions......oh yeah what about Hollywood? Also Killer. Also long way for Hot solo session........I'm not sure yet, so I'm leaving y'all hanging too!!
Keep Rollin' on 8! Get out & Skate!
PEACE.....................................Jay

Wow so cool! I really appreciate it even if noone else benefits, I sure loved it!! I just cant get how you guys drop in with both skates on the coping. I only do one foot on the coping. I guess its all how you learn. I didnt even know til recently you could drop in this way.

I am also confused, for backstalls do you recommend 1st doing one foot on the hangers like a grind? I struggled always with backstalls. I tend to get my wheels hung up on the coping so since not ready for hard, unexpected slams yet, havent done them again since my accident. My front stalls are always limited by confidence. So I tap them rather then stand up on them still. Gosh, cant wait til you do a grind tutorial!! I'll love it!! But really, no hurry. It wont be until winter that I start to push myself to do things which could really slam me.

Actually, I DID skate today. Just in a flat parking lot for half an hour. My bad but it felt so good to be free and elated again, YEAH!! I had my splint on and know now I'm a pro falling nice and softly and safely. Went OK but concerned as I am having breathing problems still. Feels like my lungs are covered in mucus and closed up and oxygen cant get in. It sucks but I hope I can get this problem solved soon or I can get an oxygen tank to take with me!!????? At least ramps is go, rest and weeze and go again......

hey just wondering, do you prefer the grind bar straight or slightly bent in like your first one got? Just wondering, as I gave mine a curve. If they go was planning a V shape, but seems like you guys prefer straight.

So.... how lucky am I to have this kid for my son? You couldn't see it in the vid of our first sk8 together in 30+ years but Jay was right behind me in case I fell so he could catch me and take the concrete himself.

The tutorials sure helped me and I'm sure they will help a lot of others. There are certainly skaters (or wannabe sk8ers)out there watching this forum who are simply in awe of the level of skating they see here. We should all encourage anyone who shows an interest, the stickers say "Dying Breed" for a reason. This is the perfect vehicle to perpetuate out hallowed craft by teaching, encouraging and sharing with each other, and with strangers, all we know. Talk about a school of hard knocks.....not many things out there harder than cement. Just knowing regular people all over the world can do these seemingly impossible tricks gives hope to others both young and old that they can one day drop into that ramp down the street themselves.

With help and encouragement from Jay and so many others, this former vert skater is now doing 2 things he has looked forward to for years. Collecting Social Security and skating once again.

Long Live Jay TV!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Jay. I have seen video of skaters doing the T stall, but have not thought much about it while skating myself. You make it look so fricken easy to do. Now I have a few more things to consider while rolling up the transitions. Keep up the Jay-TV broadcasts!

Good stuff brother Jay. I may do some filming soon, but don't know if it will teach anyone anything. Ben, you blow me away. I had to see an old video of myself to relearn how to skate so I totally get why you would want to see video. I am just floored because you are close to my dad's age and he has trouble playing tennis. I am not joking or making light of it. I think it is so cool you are skating, but please take it slow my friend. I skated with another rollerskater here in San Diego yesterday and had a blast. He is such a cool guy. I am going back to skating some big stuff this week and maybe I will share some video, but I think you have already seen it and I don't do anything new. lol

Later,

Rob

: ...do you prefer the grind bar straight or slightly

: straight.

I prefer to have a lock in spot, like on an inline skate. It gives you much better control over the sliding than if you have a flat/straight grind bar. With a 'V' in the middle (or in my case, a U), the surface you are grinding/sliding stays locked into the middle of your skate which prevents it from jamming up against your wheels and locking them up. That will cause your slide/grind to come to an abrupt stop.

  Claudine,
I've used both curved plates AND straight ones. It's personal preference. I actually find the flat ones are BETTER for slides, but not neccesarily for stalls. ESPECIALLY for learning stalls.
Also, I would try learning the "T-Stalls". For the reasons I outlined previously. They're easier to ride straight into & get back into ramp/bowl from.
