What good is your head if you turn deaf? Haha, just being sarcastic, I just don't like buds. It's just too close to my eardrums and doesn't add much to sound quality, IMO.
But hey, good to know you listen to music while carvin', too. Let's make a thread about who listens to what while skating. Do you start it or do I?

Picked up my protec kneepads the other day, and as i was having a skate at evolution yesterday i noticed i was pretty much the only person wearing pads. (They enforce wearing helmets but pads are optional) Is wearing full protection seen as 'uncool'? I myself wear elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards and even shin guards (they not only protect my shins but also are ideal for holding foam rings onto my ankle bones to prevent ankle rub). Whats everyones opinion on ppe? I know id rather slide out of a bail on plastic than rip my kneecaps off.

I personally think there are a lot of lemmings and idiots out there. Look at all the people who still skate into their 40's. How many of them wear pads. I'll tell you.......ALL of them.

Now, you might see very few wear pads at the parks, but keep reminding yourself who will be still skating in 10 years time.

Also, imagine how they will suffer if they live to old age.

Whats worse was i was stretching off and my wife overheard some kids in the seating area wondering what i was doing. All i can say to that is i hope they enjoy the lactic acid buildup or in the worse case scenario they rip a muscle from not warming up. It seems theyd rather spend money on expensive skates, boards, bearings and wheels etc rather than educating themselves on protecting their bodies. Maybe they should make helmets optional too, might knock some sense into their heads.

Ah, yes, the people laughing at us behind our back. I also hear lots of things from my partner. Sometimes it has really disappointed me and taught me to try and look closer than the sympathetic surface some people might show, when they just laugh at you behind your back.

The times I've heard questions like "Why are you wearing pads?"... Most of the times it's younger children(around 8yo) asking those questions. Adults(22+) generally understand why you do it, teens(15+) are too scared to say anything in your face, and older children(around 12yo) are also scared if you don't talk to them first.

I forget to stretch before skating, but when I feel the cramps coming and stretch to prevent them, I get the stares, too.

Hahahahaha.

The equation is really easy, too.
If you don't wear pads, if your material doesn't get damaged or if you never bail, you just don't skate hard enough and don't try anything new.

Almost no one wears helmets at the park I go to in Round Rock. Usually, there is me, my son, and one other kid who wears a helmet. Then, if the old school skateboarders join me in the bowl, that number might sometimes double.

Helmets are a requirement for those under 18, and at least 90% of those w/o helmets are under 18. Just ain\'t cool to wear one, until someone dies.

The list goes on and on. There are few enough of us as it is.

Please.....wear your helmet!!

Indeed. Not wearing pads is bad enough, but not wearing a helmet is suicide imo. The small spine at the metal park i used to go to my feet slid out on a landing and as i fell backwards i cracked my head right on the edge of the spine. Nearly knocked myself out from the impact. If i hadnt been wearing my helmet i dread to think the damage that coulda been done

  PADS, PADS, then.......some more PADS!
I wear helmet, knee, elbow, wrist & underarmor shorts as well to protect my tailbone (the worst bone I've broken skating out of several!) & hips.
Here's a pic of my pads & sk8s:

RC 09 Gear for me & Dad 1

Wear it all! Like Biff said: how many 40 year old skaters are wearing pads? All of 'em!
PEACE
Jay
And, pads ARE cool! LOL! So is living to skate again!

I was gonna ask whether I could drop the helmet after getting confident, but I can already guess the reactions.
But it's just that I miss the music while skating. It really adds a dimension.
I've really gotta find a solution, and fast. Modding my headphones into "neckphones" might be the best idea, or just using a pair of proper neckphones.

On the other hand, I did miss the roaring and screeching skateboard wheels in my five years of inline skating, so I shouldn't whine and enjoy the music of my own boots singing their "I've been drilled and bolted to death by this bully"-song.

I hate to be so crass but intelligent people wear pads and dont feel the need to fit in with the idiots. They are the ones that can do it 10 years later. Sure beats being in the hospital or crippled.

Well spoken all. Number 1 son Jay is especially right on the money....do you want to look cool until your first 360 invert faceplant (that's a "when" it happens not an "if" it happens) or do you want to enjoy the feeling of flight until senility prevents you from remembering where the sk8park is? Trust me kids, I'm still rollin' and I'm collecting Social Security. Broke a few bones along the way but pads, armored shorts, helmet and wrist guards have kept even my feeble jurassic era efforts from causing any lasting body damage.

Well....not always in the past but now I practically never ever skate without a helmet. I have been trying to add up all of my concussions and I think the number is pushing 8 or 9. Oh and those were with a helmet on!! Invest in a helmet with a foam core like a bike helmet...old protec helmets with the foam rubber pads actually accelerate the shock to your head, they may help with abrasions but not with concussion. I worry often about what I'm gonna end up like in later life. I also wear knee pads 98% of the time, sometimes its nice to cruise with out them. I discovered yesterday that if I want to push myself at the park on the concrete I also need to start wearing my elbow pads again. Pads are a must for aggressive progression, you can just push yourself so much harder with that extra plastic courage!

Agreed, although the heat just gets to me. So, when it gets cooler I will wear full armor. At this phase in my life, pushing the limit is not in my realm (esp w/o insurance). But, hopefully this fall we may have a longer season and with full pads on, I'd be more daring and willing to tempt fate. Winter comes and no indoor skating here, esp w/o a car. So, we snowboard. Difficult to progress when u don't ur not able to skate regularly. Our parks close at 7PM... we burn in the sun the whole season, no shade in sight. Well, the new park has a water fountain and bathrooms... no more porta-potty at 110 degrees.... yuck!
So put on all your pads and go crazy, but no concussions, pleeze...

I have a TSG helmet, but it's not any high tech stuff. It's just a hard outer shell, styrofoam and foam. What's the difference between "old protec" and what you use now, Brian?

Amen, brother! Knee, elbow pads, and a helmet all the way!!

I like to do what I call the turtle :

When I control my wipe out in a skate park by falling to all 4 knee and elbow pads and slide out (often spinning) across the bottom of the ramp or bowl. It is almost as fun as a good run!

I'm using a triple 8 helmet now, and it took a hard slam for me just last week. I saw stars for a split second, but my head never did hurt afterward. The newer padding in triple eights even has cloth covering which is really comfortable. I'm up to about 3 knockouts, with at least 10 other times of having my helmet take a blow for my head. All my helmets have the scrape marks to prove it.

I was looking at some Bern helmets the other day, and I'm thinking I might want to try one of those next. They have a really solid styrofoam layer throughout the entire helmet, topped with a foam padding. Looks like it might absorb shock really well and it is well vented. Anyone have any experience with them??

Sounds familiar to me, like I've had that before, too.
I also enjoy rolling around sideways in a bail. Anything just to break the fall instead of my bones. ;)

I just read this here, written in 2009 (so I might want to reconsider) :

"No Bern model is listed as meeting the ASTM F1492 skateboard helmet standard, although most of them are skate style helmets made for use by skateboarders."

The way the product looks is why I became interested.

the bad ones that I'm talking about are the traditional ones we've all used for years...a couple of different hardness of foam rubber. The ones that really offer protection are helmets like biff is talking about...I had a TSG one and it was pretty cool but I really like my new Bell! I was looking for a good picture of the inside but could not find it. Here is Bell's link http://www.bellbikehelmets.com/productDetail.asp?prodID=15
