Tips for build
I've been roller skating for a year or so now, with my local roller derby team (hopefully joining up soon). A few weeks back they had a promo event featuring some amazing vert skating, which has inspired me to try that out. I've been looking around at different websites on how to set up a set of vert skates, and now I'd just like some tips on building and the actual skating. Any and all tips would be appreciated, but right now, tips on finding trucks, plates, wheels, UHMW polyethylene, aluminum cuts etc for cheap would be particularly useful.
I live in Newcastle, Australia, if that helps.
Thanks all.

Hey Swat welcome to the forum. Who was doing the vert demo??
Plenty of info on the resources page for builds, Hops skate shop will be a good start in Sydney as he stocks a lot of slalom trucks which will be in the three to four inch hanger range which is ideal for vert, Tracker mid darts would be near perfect(IMO) and easily and cheaply available and rainskates or Powell wheels are also rad. You have a fugn rad bowl up in Newy, take advantage of it.

cheers joe (Melbourne)

I like my trucks as far forward and rearward as possible for more stability doing vert.

I like my sliders as low as I can get them and still feel comfortable, so as to prevent wheel bite when grinding/sliding.

I prefer trucks around 100mm wide (Ace makes some 109's). I prefer harder wheels for vert...harder for cement, as really hard wheels slide a bit too much on masonite ramps.

I enjoy ankle freedom, so I do not like high ankle boots unless the cuffs are flexible; speed boots work fine for me, as do cross country ski boots.

Skis work wonderfully for plates, hand cut to size. They are strong, yet flexible, light weight, thin (low profile), and are cheap to come by in old resale shops.
