:
: I can relate to that feeling very much. I lived in this way during my university time. But the older you get, the more compromises. But I am still very happy that I can go skating and also very happy that there is a community of like-minded roller skaters again.

Well, I started working since I was 12 and supported myself all through college. I didnt have fun in college except my major. I had to maintin all As cause of my scholarship too but I enjoyed it so I didnt mind. I had a break during college and had some fun before my grandmother died. I took care of her but that was my only break. I worked and worked and worked, was the only student with zero family help, and thus thats why I'm out of shape now, burnt out and really wanting a touch of fun before I get too old.

I'm just asking for an hour or 2 before the sun goes down to skate, nothing more. Flexible hours are OK! I just need to take these 2 classes so I can have more options for jobs too. This job is actually administrative also but in an IT company. Lots of promises, but I got those in the company I work for now and nothing happened. Just was given tons more work/responsibilities and no more pay even, but the company is caving in so thats why. I think I can find something within an hour away. I just might have to collect unemployment insurance (UI) in the meantime. Or just take an administrative job and wait til an opening comes.

But compromises, yes, I've only had one vacation in 20 years! I just want 1-2 hours a day to myself, even if it means I get 4 hrs of sleep. Thats all I want. Nothing more really. Lentils and rice everyday is OK. No money for vacation or camera equipment is OK. Just let me skate!! Something will come up I'm sure. Got a call last night so least its within an hour and in my field even!

Wow, those look really pretty and sturdy! I was just thinking today how my hockey boots felt so bulky, restrictive and clumsy even. They are pretty wide for me. Well, hopefully I'll get used to it or will have to check into a speed boot of some kind next time around.

Those grind plates look really cool though! What type of material is that?

Looks great. Especially the sliders look neat. How long does it take to create the sliders and how long to build the complete skate? I spent two evening last week improving my skates ...

 : Polyethylene.

Thats plastic right? Does it chip? Slide better then metal? Is it heavier/lighter? Sorry, I'm really into materials. I would think you would need a serious fine tooth saw and a special table to do this like they have in sign shops. They remind me of snow though! Pretty!!

So it chips easily? Or does it hold up OK to grinding? I used to work in a sign shop. We had software programs to set the diameters of the cuts. They probably have this material too. I'm about unemployed, hum, maybe I'll go back to making signs lol.

Thanks for the info! I'm new and trying to learn how to build my own skates later on down the road. That material really glistens though, I like!

 : So it chips easily?

I don't think so. You are probably thinking of PVC, which is quite bad. There were often cheap skates with PVC wheels and they chipped easily. I'd guess there are few material which are less suited for wheels than PVC. Steel is better, stone is better, I'd even prefer wood to PVC.

: Or does it hold up OK to grinding?

From the looks I'd suppose the material is similar to the one my sliders consist of and therefore well suited to sliding (not grinding, roller skaters grind their trucks).

Not glad to hear about this. Hope you find a good new job soon!

Honestly, I'm nuts! I cant do it right now unless I'm actually broke and too hungry to skate. I'd rather wait, do UI if I have too, or take a lame job nearby until I can find better. Life is too short to not live it when I can. A 12 hour day, taking 2 college level credit night classes, is too much to skate often. No amount of money could make up for it. I can live without a cool camera and vacations if I can only skate often.

RollerSkater Dave: Finding time (15. Jul. 2007 05:14)
Ever think of getting into your own business? It would be a lot of work but at least you could run your own schedule and pencil in that hour for yourself every day. I can relate to the not getting time for yourself scenario. During the summer I have to do all my skating in the 11 pm to midnight range (sometimes later) because of my family responsibilities (you've seen one of them). I haven't even had a chance to get to an actual skatepark this year (hopefully in September). I've been using streets, curbs, school basketball courts, wheelchair ramps, traffic islands, whatever I can find in my neighbourhood.

Don't cut yourself too short on sleep. It catches up to you.
