skateboard vs. roller skating wheels?
Is there much of a difference if you have the same compound and same hardness? I have roller bones roller skating wheels which I was told they have the same compound as the bones skateboard wheels. I have no complaints about them. The only difference I can tell is that they are flat, more narrow and dont have the rounded sides. Is there a difference on ramps?

The reason I am asking is I got my $5 Oak street skates in the mail today, they FIT! GOOD too!! They have wider trucks, between its about 2 1/2", from wheel to wheel 5 1/4" wide. So I can handle the narrow ramp trucks or stay with these. The axels are off centered, but if I can center them, I'm sure they would take skateboard wheels.

The plates are heavy. Right now they give my foot comfortable and flexible ankle support so think I can skate now this weekend, more support then my speed boots and much more comfortable and flexible then the other hockey boots where my foot was swimming around. I was thinking of trying to put these trucks on my probe plate. Its a standard kingpin setup which I am not fond of though. But I am LOVING the wider longer trucks that these have! I feel soooo stable, solid on these.

But since they are heavy and not as maneuverable as my speed boots, I think I will keep them as street skates. Love them!

I am starting to realize that it is all about preference. I grew up skating on some stock Chicago skates that were probably never meant for vert, but they worked for me. I skated my entire skate life with tiny little trucks and I was fine with it. I know that a lot of the old school skaters have just thrown together their set up and made it work for them. I don't think skates were ever designed for vert and it seems everyone just adapts to what they have or create what they want. As far as wheels go, it really depends on what you want. I would suggest that since you are fairly new at skating vert that you should not worry about your wheels too much. Skateboard wheels are typically harder, which gives you more speed. If you are not doing huge airs, then I would not worry too much about the fastness of your wheels. I recently started skating on custom skates from rollergirl and they have 52mm 101 hardness wheels. I find them to be a little slippery and not fast enough. They also get flat spots very easily. I am going to buy some 60mm bones bowl riders. I would say that you can get by with almost any outdoor wheel. I think that I have ridden on such basic skates for so long that I don't think it matters too much. Just ride what feels comfortable and buy new equipment when you need it. I think most of the good skaters out there could skate on just about any skates as long as they are comfortable. I am currently looking for more speed because I am getting into carving really fast and the faster the better for me.

Thats good to hear! I actually like my roller bones wheels a lot so I'll stick with them since they work for me. I didnt know if I were missing out in something and should consider elsewise later on. I've been skating on them for months and really not a scratch, or dent on them. The speed wheels died in 2 weeks! They are 97a, perfect for me. So that means I can leave the axels alone for now. They aren't centered, but not a problem with the roller skating wheels. I was wondering if I should try to center them since I know these could accomodate skateboard wheels if I did.

The trucks though are both much wider and longer then mine. I absolutely LOVE them that way! I had no idea...... I really dont feel I can fall over at all now no matter how I land or sk8. Its like driving in an SUV versus a Yugo where you know a little crash will kill ya. I feel invincible lol. So I might stick with this all around. Even if its mostly mental, most of aggressive skating IS mental. I will see how they handle on the ramps when I am fully healed. I think because I have such narrow heels, I love this sideways stability. I hurt my foot by falling over sideways....... I guess the big trucks are similar to wearing a wrist guard after I sprained my wrist. I dont care to repeat injuries.

Heres the comparison of trucks. Its almost an 1 1/2 between the wheels longer and an inch wider on those hockey skates and they are the same fit. Those plates were very small.

Your new style skates look a lot better to me than the old ones, but $5 is a damn good deal.

My 265s are my favorites since I can move a lot in them. These hockey ones are MUCH narrower. more comfortable, shorter and much more flexible then any other hockey skate. I hated those other ones after a short while. Couldnt get them snug. I will sell them I think.

I just will probably put the longer/wider plates on my 265s now after I test these to make sure thats what I'm after, thats all. And Riedell is making the heel so it wont slip anymore. The hockey ones are GREAT street skates tho! They are much heavier too which I wouldnt like on ramps not to mention the rigidity at the ankle. I love to bend to move. Man, love these wheels on them, donno what they are though lol. Right now my feet dont hurt at all with them on so I have something rigid to roll with if I am hurt. Just feels great to roll again! :-D One week is toooooo long.

My skates have very little ankle support and my trucks are crazy loose. I find my rollerskates to be way more comfortable then my old rollerblades. I did have an old pair of Rollerblade TRS's and they felt pretty good. After my oldschool days at the skatepark in the early 80's, I only skated ramps. With ramps I don't think there is much of a difference between inline and quads. Now that I am back in the bowls, I see a huge difference with my quads. I love to carve and grind. I think I have a different view on inlines than most. I am an oldschool quad skater who skated inline for many years and I definitely respect what they do and really don't see much of a difference. I came across an oldschool skateboarder the other day who explained to his student that I was a rollerskater, which was cool and not a rollerblader. I personally don't get the division and the trash talk between the different types of skating. I was on a skateboard everyday for five years during college and skated ramps with my inlines whenever I could find a ramp. But, to me, it is all cool. I love watching xtreme sports and love watching the bmx people and the moto people and the skateboarders and the snowboarders. Talent is talent and fun is fun.

Very nice stuff! Ah, you make me dreaming of new wheels.

Just yesterday I tried my revamped roller-skates. They are getting where I want to have them. Hopefully, I will shoot some pictures to show what I did to them.

For vert, modern skateboarding wheels rules!!!!! all sizes/hardness/prices available.
I like Powell Bowl bombers 64mm PF (Park Formula) or other brand 60mm+ in Park or Street Formula: very hard and still grippy when you need and still sliding ability (with less flatspoting than classical formulas, good for unlocked plates grinds). Very fast on smooth ramp!!!!!
The centered core gives more precision (not too wide also) and rounded edges slides faster on the coping 50/50's (easier to engage/disengage on the coping also).

Thanks, I guess eventually I will move to skateboard wheels. I'm checking into skateboard trucks now lol. Now I'm all in for wider trucks, as long as wheel to wheel its below 6", preferable 5 1/2"! I cant believe how much I LOVE em!

I like my wheels at 60mm diameter, 97A+ hardness, light, not too wide and w/rounded edges. I'm skating these 60mm Type S wheels and love them. Fast, light, not slippery. Vert skateboarder, Sergie Ventura rides them.

I LOVE my new trucks! Those will be perfect for me. I'm debating now putting skateboard trucks on my vert skates then I could use those. 97a is perfect for me too! I thought I would hate wide and trip over my wheels, now I dont like my little trucks!
