ACS 580
- ACS651s are still available from Shiners. Mon Barbour can probably still source them at SS20 and my father runs Mayfair skates, though he's trying to run it down now and retire - the big companies and shops make it impossible to compete effectively. Also tips for sticking sliders on variflex plates etc

Lee Yau: Monster etc (4. Sep. 2002 11:45)
I stumbled on this site a few weeks ago while testing out google during lunch... punched in 'brian wainwright' and here we are.
I used to skate a lot of banks - South Bank mainly, and skateparks in London during the eighties and miniramps when they started popping up - I'll put some piccies up. My first vert experience was at Mon Barbours first and I think only open competition at Southsea in 1988. Jason Tubb won, though I broke my tibula and got carted off to A&E. Subequently kept to mini ramps until 1991-ish when I went abroad to work.
Only venture out occasionally on the flat, usually with baby daughter in tow. Tried South Bank at the beginning of summer and totally killed myself - 10 years of practice to catch up on... Anyway, the reason for the mailing is that there was a retrospective of 20 years of the Monster mastership on the Extreme Sports channel in the UK last week. I thought it would all be skateboards, but to my surprise, Jimi Scott and Brain Wainwright popped up at the 1987(?) event section. There was also part of the short segment from the video of the 1988 event with Jason Tubb and I think Tom Friedlich(?). It was weird seeing all this after seeing inliners reinventing the wheel and more over the last few years.

I'll try and get some stuff on a web site at some point, since there seems to be a fair bit of equipment still available, in the UK at least - ACS651s are still available from Shiners. Mon Barbour can probably still source them at SS20 and my father runs Mayfair skates, though he's trying to run it down now and retire - the big companies and shops make it impossible to compete effectively. Welcome to the lot! It's great to see that there are more and people interested in our way to use a ramp.

I've been to a concrete skate park in southern London in the late eighties myself. Bought a pair of Bauer boots at Rom Skates in Greenwich (are they still around?) with Rom base plates attached to them and a set of crappy wheels.

I'm looking forward to your pics!

Could be. I have been to Münster in 1986 or 1987.

Friedrich? A guy doing backflips about three meters above the coping? I'm not sure about the name, though.

I used ACS580s on variflex plates with a slider set up, but I found that due to the ride height of the trucks, the sliders were not very effective. This was better with the lower ACS 651s, but I didnt get on with the width, probably since I rode miniramps and banks.

I'll post an image once I take a piccy
Anyway here's me at South Bank doing a wallride around 1991. I ride sidestance so wallrides off a bank are similar to riding a ramp...

My dad phoned Shiners (UK distributor); they say only 651 hangers left at £8 each. They can be mailed over to you, but it may be worth seeing if you can source 'retro' Tracker midtracks locally in the States, which are similar to the ACS 580 width.

Hope this is of use

 Lee,

It's good to know someone else out there is riding the same setup and I am. I think the 651 will be too wide for my tastes and I'm trying to figure out a way to setup slider rails. My feet are small and the trucks are very close together so I am used to sliding on bars 3 inches away from my boot. I also ride sideways. Are you still skating these days? If so, where abouts? Check out the pic and maybe you can give me some suggestions. Thanks.

I'm still here. Just got a lot of work to do. Just finished taking some pictures of my old baseplates for the sliders. Will put it up when I get them developed and scanned.

I've been inspired to get my creaking body down to the South Bank after work again. The old skills are coming back slowly, and very painfully...

anyway - another old pic - Jason Tubb at Farnborough ramp in 1987

Just had another look at your skates.
The method of setting up the sliders on my variflex plates would be too high to be effective on your skates. They are essentially a double height row of skateboard slide rails on either side of the kingpin, near the base. Very similar to a tracker set up, but probably ineffective for a short baseplate like yours. What you have seems to be the ideal position for a slider - too close to the plate might lead to hang ups - been there too often already
