no luck grinding with my jump bars.....
I tried some simple plate grinds but the narrowness of the jump bars make it unstable to jump down on. Any hints on this? My foot just healed so dont want to sprain it again. Is there some plastic I can bolt to the jump bar to make it wider? I think when I can, I will go back to rollergirls! Those were very stable.

: I havent really done this yet and dont know how to honestly. It doesnt seem possible on the round rails since my skates cant clasp on like the inliners. I have a flat rail at home. Can I do stuff on this? Besides stalls? How do I start? I dont want to start on the ramps since I dont have insurance. I was going to try to learn on inlines first but when a guy let me borrow some, I didnt like them so I gave them back.

A grind is when the axle of your truck touches the coping or rail or curb or whatever. I would personally feel safer doing a drink in a bowl. Just do a nice carve and touch your upper foot lightely agains the coping.

I think roller skater terminology is:

Grinding is done on the axles
Sliding is done on the sliders

Inline skaters don't have axles to grind on and they call all their sliding moves grinds. Pretty confusing.

+1

Flat sliding bars+round coping are good, just have to do like skateboards and take care of you balance.

For both slide/grind and mixed first steps are may be (they were for me):
on small ramps/bowls (never liked fun boxes):
- without trying to slide/grind, just try to land knee bent a bit and stay in balance on the coping, then (turn?) and go down. Once you are a bit confident try to check the sliding by moving your feet a bit once you're on the coping.
- in order to learn the grinding/sliding trajectories, try to run large ellipse trajectories on the ramp, jumping , rolling and the platform, then droping in the ramp. As you get more confident get closer to the coping....
-As Robert told you also is good.
Feeling more confident you can combine the 3.....
For me the first learned grind/slide was one foot in slide, the other in grind (kind or king grind?), so I was 1/4 to drop in.

Good advice all round...
can I suggest at this point, dont be in to much of a hurry to learn everything as you will sacrifice style and style is the difference between just making a trick and owning a trick.I'm not talking posing it's just that I've seen to many folks jump, stretch, sketch and do anything to pull a move only to make it look like shit.It dont look good if it dont flow!

anyhoo keep that fire in your belly' I like hearing what your up to.

cheers joe

Thanks! I just want to do something new but need to watch it since I dont have medical. Plus until I can do a rail, they inliners will forever nag me to get "aggressive skates." The skateboarders like my new trucks but these are still disco skates to the inliners til I can slide a rail. So I'm MAD!! So need to learn to grind!!

Should I just jump my square rail first? I can put it in grass first til I get it. Thats only 8", at the park its 12" and round. There are no really short ramps at the park and waiting on the bowls til I have medical. I just havent adjusted to so many transitions yet.........but I might be there in a few days anyway lol!! Too much fun, I forget to be careful.

It might be too soon? I still dont drop in right now on the halfpipe since at times I get my wheels hooked up on the coping and thought I could hurt myself doing that. Should I take out my 14" launch ramp instead lol? ........I donno really how to be careful lol. Its frustrating......I like to have fun!

Ok, now I think I understand what you mean. It sounds like you are trying to do plate slides. I recommend not trying them yet. Before you try slides, you should try all types of variations of plate tricks. There is the footplant, plate stahl, backwards plate stahl etc. If you bought the wide trucks, then I suggest trying grinds on your axles. This is way safter and easier than plate tricks. Also, you mention doing this on a rail instead of ramp. This can be very dangerous and your can slam really hard. I personally don't find plate slides to be a beginner trick and I recommend against them at this time.

I'm curious, do your kingpins extend beyond the hangers? Mine do. I'm going to try to go on the sides of it and see if I can still do it. But I will go slow. I've never seen a girl grind around here so when I learn, it will be awesome!!

I found out a 1/2 hour from here, there is a mini ramp thats only 3-4 feet tall! I would feel fine trying tricks on that thing for starters. I'll find out when its open and give it a go soon! I think if its small, then I couldnt hurt myself really on the falls so I can go at it!!

I just find the very narrow jump bars unstable. When I start working, I'm getting RollerGirls grind bars again. They give a big base to balance on. And she told me they will spark sometimes lol, sounds pretty cool! I was trying to save money/weight with the jumpbars and I guessed I goofed.

It's harder since they're so narrow, but you can learn all kinds of plate stalls which you can slide in the future. You might slide by accident while learning the stalls. Grinding 50-50 with yur kingpins over the hangars is a bad deal...extra challenging. Round, flat, curb...they all work.

Irene, just thought I would tell you I really admire you! Those bars are really narrow for me, my side to side balance isnt as good as I would like. Thats why I LOVE the wider trucks and hate inlines!

But I'm going to go to the mini ramps and do stalls and all there, cant wait!! I'll wait on plate slides until I start working and can get wider plates. I love those trucks I just got, handle GREAT, but I'm not so sure now that they are ideal for grinding or for wheels. I might go ahead and get the minis or other narrow skateboard trucks next summer since by then, I'll be wanting to really rip at this stuff! I am trying to find out if the minis have long kingpins too. Grinding on kingpins mest me up yesterday! There wasnt a ton of room between them and my wheels. The better I get, the more I want to do lol!
