why is street so popular?
Not compared to some people lol. But Robert, you are the only serious quad skater with just one pair of skates. Pretty much the rest of us start to hoard what works for us if we know they dont make this stuff anymore. I know many rink quad skaters with dozens of skates, now thats weird! They will pay $300 for old used wheels and those dont even last but months, a year max.

Well, I just fit in better with skateboarders I guess.......

: Yes Claudine, you sure go through equiptment. lol I did not find inline skating to be any easier. There are some old school guys out there that are amazing in bowls and on ramps. Check out Cesar Mora and there are these two Japanese brothers that kill it. I can't remember their names. I love watching all extreme sports and respect anyone that dedicates themselves to these sports. It is too bad that there are jerks out there, but they exist everywhere and in every sport. Someone brought up a really cool point on my other forum. Our sports are the only sports that you can participate in side by side with pros. That is pretty cool.
:
: : Inline is OK but I do not respect them. Few of them are very rude and arrogant. Its much easier to learn then skateboarding or roller skating. They dont need to be creative, everything is done for them. After 2 months, some talk like they are pros with a dozen or more grinds they can do and some love to make fun of my skates asking me when I'm going to get REAL skates. If I got that good that quickly, I would be bored. It wouldnt be so rewarding. But I dont get whats so big about street and how that makes them "aggressive" while bowl skating is not. I dont know much about the struggles you talk about with skating. My only interest is having fun. My only struggle is finding parts for my equipment. And things that fit lol. I love skating with the skateboarders. None of them have been asses to me?
: :
: : : Claudine, I was a sponsored vertical inline skater and chose to go back to my roots. I think inline skating is cool, but it seems the culture is out of whack. I participate on a skateboard forum and hear terrible things about inliners. I know it does not apply to all, but I think they are just younger and do not respect the culture of skateboarders and rollerskaters. Not that I care, but I get way more respect than the "fruit booters" as I have heard them called. I think it is just a younger generation that does not value our history or our stuggles. A lot of the vert rollerskaters on here have experienced skating with boarders like we do now with out any others around. We respect skateboarding and having to prove ourselves and gain acceptance. These inliners have way more than we ever had, but I am damn proud to be one of you.
: : :
: : : : I dont get it. Inliners talk nonstop about street skating, grinds. They seem to have no interest in vert and for the most part, refuse protective gear. I'm not sure why inlines are so popular either. I feel a huge disconnect. Am I'm missing something here........? I love my trucks and love to carve the bowls. I wouldnt mind it if I could jump on a ledge, but its not like doing tricks inside a bowl or eventually diving into and carving a 10.5 foot bowl!! Now to me thats exciting!!

U and Joe are some rad skaters!! I really enjoy them photos. :-D Sorry to hear UR sore. I'm light so for the most part I only hurt if I twist a joint, but I hit my hips hard and there arent muscles nor fat on them to break the crash. Lemme know what you do for hip pads. I have the foam from the crash pads and its too airy for hard falls. I plan on doing this for a long time! I know women break their hip when they get old and its a big deal. So since I get sore, would rather look like a dork then stop or slow down even. I crave that "rush". I'm going nuts right now. I might have to skate next weekend lol. Even if I just roll the bowl easy, man, ever since I dropped in the first time I'm addicted!! Since the kids like the ledges, I guess I shouldnt complain cause then I get to hog the bowl to myself at times. I just cant get myself to be a jock and go to the gym lol. The sun is out today finally, I will jump some curbs with my bike and hope that helps!

I'm expecting pictures of this halfpipe from Tim. His wife and him are also in Albert Park sometimes. And he promised me a picture. :-)

Thick high density foam (called Moosgummi ("moss rubber") in Germany) rules! It's able to even save my ass! But I would advise to take at least 1 cm thick sheets and cut them to your whim. Speedy recovery to you!

That's probably the reason why many of the vertical roller skaters don't use terms like "aggressive" or "quads". It's inlinger lingo and roller skaters shying away from those terms probably don't want to get into this rudeness and arrogance but rather take pride in their own culture. If inliners and skateboarders choose to be at war which each others, at least I want to stay out of this. There are some inliners whom I do respect but in general, I do get along better with the skateboarders. It's a cultural thing I would guess.

Well, I guess I wont ever understand it. We are all there to roll and do our tricks, why should it matter what we chose? I get along with everyone until they start attacking me. If another skater gives me crap and tells me I need to switch my skates for REAL ones, I walk away and dont look their way. I just dont understand it. Most inliners are OK but a few rude ones makes me less likely to try to befriend the rest.

I also dont speak their language on all their grinds nor get whats so great. OK, you slide with one foot one inch this way, one inch turned that way. Now lets see you do some cool stuff in the bowl I say!!

They are just a bit immature (and maybe stay so for the rest of their miserable life). The skates they use are the REAL ones because they define their sheer existence by belonging to the group using those. It's probably a sign of respect when they ask you to get some REAL skates. They seem to want you to be part of their in-group ...

OK, that makes sense to me. I'm not so concerned with being "in." Thats not me, I'm not superficial and dont care to have superficial friends. I just dont like being attacked, thats all.

Its nice to fit in, but I would rather be accepted for being "me" and who I am then for trying to be someone else. I wish kids would think and create more for themselves. I much more respect someone who is "wierd" but is creative and does there own thing then someone who is "cool." Diversity makes life more interesting!

Well, I'm pretty happy being a roller skater! I do sort of feel like I fit in in a way with this forum and the skateboarders...while still being different. :-D

It may help to shift your own perceiption. See it rather as a compliment than as an attack. At least ist part, it probably is.

But your are accepted as being yourself! Just don't expect to make everybody happy.

: I wish kids would think and create more for themselves.

Wouldn't that be nice. They even do this in places of the world where they can't get their stuff and identity off the shelf.

Yeah, still lots of creativity and respect going on in roller skater land. :-)
