Truck Grind Progress...or lack thereof.

Hey All. Well after Buba's photos, I'm embarrassed to even show this but I know a couple of you asked me for it so here's installment one of my limited progress on truck grinds.
I continue to have difficulty arresting my rotation to only 90 degrees. My body wants to turn 180. So far, I've only been able to get 1 skate on the coping with the other skate rolling on the platform. Not REALLY grinding, but I'm getting the feeling of my trucks on the coping. Which is ALOT different feeleing than my ghetto grind "plates" I made for my old skates. So anyway, without further excuses here are a couple of video clips from last weekend of me trying.

This is about a 4 foot tall 1/4 pipe I'm trying the grinds on:

Here's me trying it on a 7 foot tall 1/4 pipe on the other side of the park:

And here I make it on the 7 foot:

Now, ANY advice, observations etc. is not only welcome, it's invited. I'm having a hard time getting this heel-toe thing to happen with my feet! My feet LIKE being Parallel!! No offense to my side-surfing friends intended, of course!
OK. Sorry, I suck. But you guys wanted to see the "process". So, there it is.
Help. Must Grind with both skates before RollerCon!!!!!
Which reminds me: Who's coming to Vegas July 29 through August 2, 2009 for RollerCon???? I'll be hosting the skatepark tour for the 3rd consecutive year & this year we even have an indoor park for all the noninitiated to Vegas in Summer. It's going to be AWESOME!!!!!
PEACE, Jay

Hey, you dont suck! You bypassed me on this already. It would be a ton easier to master in a bowls first because you dont have to focus as much on rotation, just moving the feet in line. Or practice stalls that way too. Thats the best of my advice. Honestly, I love the less then perfect videos! Mine will be less then perfect. I'm proud of looking like Olive Oil when I skate sometimes lol. :-D

Thanks for the videos! I loved them!!!! And if a miracle happens and money falls from the sky, I'll be at rollercon.

Yea right on dood.Warts and all vid is the only way to go,no b/s,as it happens. The foot on the platform is a step up on what I was suggesting and looks the goods.Maybe for heel toe practice try just axle stalling instead of grinding to get the feel of it and them give it some juice.
Keep it comming.

cheers joe

Great Jay!!! Love your wife laugh!!! vids are good to analyse.
For tricks on the coping, I noticed that hand /shoulders placement always precedes and induces the foot placement. When something is wrong on the foot placement, I try to see where/when I did something wrong before with upper body parts. So maybe try this for 50/50: focus on your hand corresponding to the skate that doesn't want to grind... and try to place it (your hand) less sideway and to move it more frontward or backward, depending on the skate. Your skate should follow... Following Joe and Bernhart advice should give you the good hand/shoulder placement.
You already have one 50, second should be soon!!!!
Enjoy sunny weather, here it's too wet!!!!!

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Zorg

Thanks Everybody for your words. It all sounds like sound advice. But I've got to hand it to Zorg. WOW! Your grinding tutorial videos were CRAZY! Zorg, you've got every lip trick I've ever thought of & several I hadn't! Incredible patinage, Brother!! And, I saw what you were saying about your trailing hand/skate in the shorter video. It's actually raining here today for the 1st time in over a month or I'd be trying that immediately. I'm hoping to skate tomorrow. I'll be trying everyone's advice then. Including the sensible: trying to learn heel-toe stalls before trying the grinds!
Best to everybody. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Skate if you can!!!!
PEACE....

Good luck Jay! I guess I need to get my arms/shoulders going the right direction myself. I should be great on grinding because in many pics my right arm is going forward and my left arm is beating the crap out of the person (not) behind me lol. ????? I'm surprised I've never dislocated my shoulder. lol. ;-D

Biffsk8er: Truck Grind Progress...or lack thereof. (27. Jan. 2009 06:25)
 Jay,

I just read all of the replies, and they all have merit.

First though, it helps to have good speed coming up onto a coping grind. Going too slow makes it hard to maintain your body over the grind. Use good pads and crashing won't be a factor in your attempting more speed.

Second, As Claudine said, practicing in a bowl will be easier to learn than on a street course or half-pipe. Wooden bowls are the best! Not as painful learning as concrete can be. :Þ~

As Joe said, try stalling and not sliding first. Helps to condition brain to accept odd foot placement before going for the grind.

As Zorg said, upper body and body part(s) orientation helps to direct the feet. Play with it, and figure out which different body movements make any trick you do easier or better. This is never the same for every skater. Everyone finds their own style. Always keep your body relaxed, flexed, and balanced. Bent knees, elbows, and waist will help you keep your center of gravity.

Additionally, try just skating flat-street with your skates heel to toe while following a straight line on the ground. Figure out which skate is better to have in front. Which skate better while going right or left. I find that going right means having the left skate in front, while going left means having the right skate in front. This allows you to come out of the grind with your skates already in position to go back to a parallel stance!

And finally, nothing beats watching others, or finding videos of others, doing what it is that you want to learn! Dissect what it is they are doing right and replicate their actions.

Good luck!
Biffsk8er
