Bernhard: Site-Name suggestion (23. Jan. 2009 14:32)
 Hi all,

some time ago, we had a big discussion for a site name for this here vertical roller skating site. www.verticalrollerskating.net obviously is a bit unwieldy and I think the most prominent suggestion back then was origin8. I do like this name, but it's connection to roller skating is not as strong as I would like.

Now I've got another idea: What about 8wheels.net?

How do you like this? Would it be a problem that it can be confused with 8wheels.com which is already taken by something useless?

I want to finish my t-shirts and want a better name too. The problem with 8 wheel names is that it doesnt differ rollerskates from blades. I like origin8 a touch better since it hints on how we came first. I just want a good name for my t-shirts myself that refer to just rollerskates. I guess its because when I say rollerskating people go oh, inlines. NO!

Hi Bernard. I missed out on earlier site-name discussions. I have to say that if we're thinking about a site-name change we need to make sure there's something in the name that suggests what we do. Vertical, extreme, aggressive, etc. Otherwise, we're lumped in with jam-skaters (dancers on sk8s) & rink skaters. Not that I have anything against them. (Well, maybe the jam-skaters..LOL!) But, we're as Brother Duke's Company name says a "Dying Breed". There are so few of us skating pools, vert, mini on rollerskates. I mean, God Bless Bernard & the Vert Forum, but even with this incredible tool there are a couple handfuls of us. The name should suggest that. I'll be thinking of ideas over the next few days...I always liked the Vert-Skating-Forum....
PEACE,
Jay

I know, but if lump it together with rollerskate, you always get a name that's too lone for a speaker of the english language. Not that a German would have a problme with it, we can read words like 'Donaudampfschifffahrtskapitän' and longer with no problem. ;-) Of course we could do it in a nerdy way and shorten verticalrollerskating to v19g like internationalization is shortened to i18n. To me, 'aggressive' would be a term that belongs to inline skating.

: But, we're as Brother Duke's Company name says a "Dying Breed".

'Dying Breed' is a great name. But I think we are much more alive than even 10 years ago. Besides, it's already Duke's name.

Ah, the name of the forum probably won't change (except in the case that the site name would suggest it. If the site name were verticalrollerkating.net, the forum could just be named 'forum'.

Maybe a bit history in place. The whole thing started when I got my domain adinfinitum.de in 1999 and wanted to something with the web space that was part of the package. The first thing was the 'How to build a vertical roller skate'. Later I added some pages that became Sk8Mag.de. At some point in time Brian contacted me and encouraged me to start a forum (Sk8Mag.de already had some forums). After some poor guy died skating the then new skate park in Hard, Chris Eggers, Markus Suchanek, Sven Lippert and me started [url=http://w-y-h.org/]W-Y-H.org[/org], a site promoting the usage of safety gear.

In this way, adinfinitum.de has served as an incubator for a few sites, but the most important one is still missing an own identity. Maybe it will stay without one, maybe not.

I wasn't suggesting biting Duke's name, I just meant we needed something that reflects our passion. Not just for 8 Wheels, but for doing things on 8 wheels that most people never imagine.
I still haven't a great idea yet, but my head's full of Zorg's grinds! I'm off to the Vert ramp to try to realize my vision!
Talk to you guys later..........

Oh no, I didn't understand it this way. I just wanted to express that I like Duke's name.

It's not really a necessity. If you think of great brand names, they seldom reflect what the company is doing.

That's really tough.

I'm enjoying the last few weeks of having 2 channels and they had the winter Xgames on. So we could use X something if you wanted to refer to vert/extreme. I'm not good at names, just the pictures. Just something for others to start from.

when joe and i were young, way back when j.c. played full back for nazareth, we used to call it rubzaskating so we didnt get muddled up with skateboarding, as we did both disiplines back then.
sounded silly then, come to think of it, still sounds quite silly.
how about vertikal rollschuhe mit steroids.

 : I like this name...

It is a good name: It is short and it has the connection to our activity.

I do not very much like terms like 'aggressive', 'extreme', 'quads'.

The term 'quads' to me came from inline to distinguish roller skating from inline skating. Before the inline boom, roller skating was an unambiguous term. But our roots are much earlier and deeper than the 1990s. Also, the term 'aggressive' came into being with inline skating. The connection with inline skating is sometimes problematic, sometimes it is very friendly (like in Spain). However, I firmly believe that we should be proud of our own culture. This should be friendly and tolerant towards other riders using the same terrain (the terrain probably wouldn't exist if there were only roller skaters), but to us, inlines aren't "the real skates", like many of us are being told again and again. Our skates are our skates and they are at least as "real" as everybody else's skates.

I definitely like the direction you're going, Bernard. We've got alot of history. Rollerskates were around before skateboards & scooters, not to mention inlines! But, as you said, without those 'newer' sports we would never have the facilities @ our disposal all over the Globe that we all enjoy. So, I haven't anything against them either. I think we all have a certain amount of pride in the fact that we go our own way though. I'd love to see RollerSkate or RollerSK8 in the name somewhere......& of course I LOVE Vert, so that'd be cool too. I know what you mean about the word "quad" though. No offense to Gambin intended. But I never heard that word til rollerblades came out & didn't understand it then either. I mean most stock blades had 4 wheels per skate too, didn't they? So why were we, rollerskaters now 'quads"?? I didn't get that. Still don't.
I kinda liked Ludi's suggestion though. LOL! Bumzaskate?? or something....hilarious.....
Hope all's well in Deutchland.......

Rubzaskating, rubzaskating! Sounds like a malapropism (I had to look this up, I admit) of roller skating. But I know another english word that I learnt only last week by heart now: 'vernacular'. I wouldn't have believed this existed.

Hey Nelo,

I'm glad that you like the name Adinfinitum. Most people hearing it (and not knowing Latin) don't like it. However, the domain for the roller skating site isn't really adinfinitum.de. Adinfinitum is just my personal domain which I use for my web projects. And the roller skate site is at adinfinitum.de/Rollerskate. At first, the skate magazine was only reachable via adinfinitum.de/Sk8Mag (it still is), but since the name Sk8Mag.de hadn't been taken, I used this.

Now I'm torn between three options:

- change nothing
- use verticalrollerskating.net
- use vrsk8.net

In all cases, the site would still be reachable via adinfinitum.de/Rollerskate
