: I've got no idea at the moment how this should be done at the moment. The forum has no concept of read/unread posts. Do you mean the way your browser shows links already visited?

Correct. It changes the color of links that have been read.

Is there any way to make this site so that it will allow the person posting to fix (edit) his/her own posts? Sometimes, I want to go fix a post, if a pic didn't take, or if I left something out, etc..

Also, a button for 'All Read' would be good too. Every time I clear my cache at home, posts I already read now show up as 'not read'!! Drives me crazy!!

Cheers!

Someday, maybe. But first I have to implement authentication. You wouldn't want everybody to be able to edit your posts, would you? Therefore there has to be a login and editing would only be possible if you are logged in. Until this is implemented, you can always ask me to repair a post.

I understand. This would require some JavaScript programming which I try to avoid like the plague. This opens a Pandora box of browser incompatibilities. I've got some JavaScript in the image browser which serves to show a preview of an image when you put the mouse pointer over the image numbers. However, this gimmick seems to be dysfunctional with the InternetExploder. And it's difficult for me to test this browser since I don't have it on my computer.

 Understood. I prefer firefox myself.

Oh well, it was worth asking.

By all means! There are quite some features in the forum which came into existence because of requests and discussions like this.

But it will be lost once you delete your browsing history. That's what causes Biff problems.

A better solution would be to store this information on the server. A prerequisite would be authentication. But I'm not sure if I want to use storage space for this. Although, lets see: The forum has about 8000 messages, so we would need about 8 MBytes to store this information for 100 users. Sometimes I get E-Mails that are bigger. But they don't need to be stored permanently on the server.

Authentication might help prevent those posts, like the one the other day, that are randomly generated by a program. The program would also have to be able to generate a user name and password to get in, further complicating its' ability to post.

Absolutely correct. There are several benefits in implementing authentication and the one single disadvantage would be a slightly higher entry barrier (one could still allow unauthenticated post and just switch them off when there is a spam wave). I just won't enumerate all advantages that come to my mind or else the members of the forum will nag me to implement it. You can call me lazy for not having done it already, but it is a bit of work.

Regardless of what you do or don't do, we are all thankful that you even have this forum here. It is quite a boon to Quad vert skating.

Cheers,
Biff

I'm trying to make this place as good as I can but it's still a project done in my spare time. And I am very thankful for feedback and hope to use it to make the site more useful for all. It's so great to meet you all in the net and sometimes even in person! :-)

Hey MrB,Biff and other assorted good folks,I recon the forum is rad as is.Editing allows for over polishing in my humble opinion. If you fuck something up,,dont stress,,have another go,bit like a skate vid with bails and eating,,warts and all,the best vids are like this,it keeps a human feel to the whole thing and keeps your head in check.I also recon the more tech these spamers get the less interest they'll show in a simple setup like ours.Plus with the mega undertech computer illiterates like Ludi and me,if everything gets too full on,we are bound for failure(Ludi and me that is).
Just my 2 cents worth.

cheers joe

 Hi Joe,

thanks for your kind words. There's a lot of truth to them. You can't have your pie and eat it too, There are always compromises and we have to try to find a good balance.

As for the spammers: I believe that they don't have a concious interest in our forum. The spam posts showing up here are generated automatically by spam bots. I think the people responsible for this aren't even aware of out forum. Or else they would stop spamming it since it is of no use. I find those people disgusting and I don't hesitate to delete their crap.

The computer literacy of Ludi and you may be whatever it is. Fact is that I (and very likely the whole rest of the forum) am very happy to have you here and I always chuckle about your australian humour. Be assured that new additions to the forum won't make it more complicated.

I like it the way it is too, simple and effective! And I know enough about programming to know how time consuming and complicated it is that I am even more appreciative of this board and the work that went into it. Mr. B is the man!!!!!

BTW, its been 12 weeks. My arm should be OK now for easy rolling. I hope to go this weekend first time. :-D!

Thank, you make me blush! It's often in the time between Christmas and New Year that I implement something new. The evening hours are often too short and too crowded with other things. But I hope it won't take till next Christmas till I find time to implement some improvement.

Btw, be safe and have fun! If you fall, I'd suggest falling to your other arm. Preferably to an elbow pad. :Þ ~

I got my stitches out today. I know for sure that I have to wear my leg brace for at least 3 more weeks. That is when my next Dr. visit is scheduled.

Cheers!

Joe, I agree with you completely! I'm a techno-feeb myself. Also, I agree that the occasional screwed up post just shows we're all human. It adds character to our little online 'discussions'. You Aussies really seem to have your heads on straight down there, Brother!

Bernard, the forum rocks, Bro. Seriously. I know the rest of you guys will laugh at me, but I swear just 3 years ago I truly thought I was the only guy in the US still vertical rollerskating. That's how the whole "Jay The RollerSkater" thing started with me. Everyone I knew & skated with called me that because, literally I was the only rollerskater any of them had ever seen. So when Dawn (my better half, who's getting almost as big as a house right now) found Duke through MySpace, & I was able to talk to him then actually skate with him, Desi & Lee I was beside myself. :)
Now that I've found the Forum, & through it all of you, I laugh at myself for thinking I was like the Lone Ranger on Rollerskates!
So, what I'm trying to say, Bernard, is I think you rule for creating/administering this forum. And I'm very Stoked to have access to everybody & our collective & unique experiences. Thanks. I hope to meet you & skate with you sometime soon.
That goes to all the rest of you rollerskaters too!!!

PEACE......Jay

I had the same experience when I started in the eighties. The kids in the skate park called me "the roller", and it sounded like a title to me. I got to know more roller skaters since there where a few in Germany back then. We also had quite a few contests back then.

In 1999, when I put my first web page online, I thought I was the only roller skater left and I thought the best I could give to the world was this page how to build vertical roller skates. Then Brian found me and encouraged me to start the forum (I already used the software for the Sk8Mag.de forums. I just needed to internationalize it).

It was unbelievable to me to meet all those roller skaters in 2004 in Woodward. Amazing people! I hope also hope to meet more of you and have a good skate with you.

Thanks, Biff. I'm just being honest & myself, though. I LOVE to SK8. I'm so stoked to have this forum to meet with & converse with everybody.
I hope you're recovery is progressing well. I'm sure everyone would love a Thread regarding your recuperatory status....I know I'm interested.
Best to your Fam too, Bro....
