Yes, to a certain extent, this will always be the case with allround skates ...

Yes, I really like big soft wheels ... On my current pair I have 70 mm Kryptos
.
Very soft, very large, great for cruising.

They provide an extremely smooth ride on the streets, even on rougher surface. But they're quite heavy when jumping, and are slow in the ramp.

Me too :)

Hard wheels are faster in the ramp. But in concrete parks, soft wheels are quite OK. My new wheels will be medium.

Definitely true.

I don't skate to one spot then stay there. I won't carry heavy vert skates on my poor back while crusing the streets all day, carving banks, and jumping stairs.

Anyways, now I have to develop a plan for the plates ...

Hi all

I just received the set of four Gullwing Shadows
I ordered a while ago.

They have custom dimensions; here's some data to compare:
pinkjuice.com/rollerskating/trucks.txt.
Please post any missing bits or corrections. For example I'd be
interested in the heights of the Indies and Trackers.

If you think they might fit you, ask at
http://www.gullwingtrucks.com/gwcontact.htm
Lisa, perhaps they are candidates as options for the new vert
skates you are planning to offer in your store?

The trucks look OK, now I need nice plates.

Do I wait for Lisa's vert skates?
Perhaps she will offer separate plates in her store ...
Do I wait for Brian's skates?
Not sure about the time frame ...
Perhaps I could ask Lee if he could make a pair of plates for me?
His prototypes definitely look nice . . .
Should I make my own?
Might be a good idea, but I lack some tools ...

Time and $s, always two of the most important factors in such decisions :)
And I need shoes too ...

 Tobi,

I should be receiving (4) Indy 101mm, anyday now. I will measure them so we can compare. I will also measure my ACS 580s.

I plan on mounting them to the Tracker plates after I cut them down to fit me. I think I will stick with the Riedell boots I'm riding now. I like them and the new ones have some trim colors added. I've been in contact with K2. I have a source for the Toecaps for those in Germany: see email response below:

I believe our distributor in Germany, K2 Europe, still has some of
those in stock. For parts in Germany, please have your friends contact: Wolfgang Braun in our office in Germany. His email address is braun@k2-skates.de

Any choice on a boot/shoe? How about a pic of those Gullwings?

If you don't mind me asking, Tobi, how much did you pay for those custom made Gullwings? (US dollars)

Hi Dave

The were not custom made for me. I asked many truck companies if they have narrow, low trucks, and Gullwing had made some.
I don't think I could afford asking them to run a batch just for me :)

I can't publish the price, but if you're interested, ask at
www.gullwingtrucks.com/gwcontact.htm .

By the way, some people create custom trucks (or hangers) in series of one set; Britta from quad-skates.de rides hangers that a friend cast or molded for her, if I remember correctly.

 P.S.

I meant, contact them if you're interested in the trucks (or other Gullwing products), not if you're simply curious about the price I paid (sorry I can't disclose it).

Great; I will add the data to pinkjuice.com/rollerskating/trucks.txt. The list might be useful for other rollerskaters too.

Thanks! Some months ago, after we talked about the toe caps on your skates, I went to a local sporting goods store and ordered toe caps. They are for K2 inlines, Bob or Fatty I think, they might be the same type you have. So now I have a source, and I have various sizes of nice toe caps :)

> Any choice on a boot/shoe?

That's the hardest part. I'm not sure what I want: I'm not really doing a lot of vert (no nice skate parks in Berlin), and I'm still unsure if I should build a second pair as vert skate while keeping my current pair, or if I should try to build a new allround skate.

It's basically a choice between high/mid top sneakers and Riedell style boots or hockey boots.

Here are some sneaker collages: pinkjuice.com/rollerskating/pics/various/cuts/.

I think that the best combination of comfort, ankle support, and ruggedness could be a mid top skateboard shoe.

The IPath Grasshopper for example could be a very nice rollerskate shoe. I like zebra and navy/white.

> How about a pic of those Gullwings?

Coming soon :)
Don't expect too much; it's mostly the dimensions that make them what I want.

In my experience it's no good idea to try to build an allround skate. I once tried to build a skate for cruising the street and for riding vert and ended with something that wasn't suited to neither purpose. Optimize your tool for the task at hand!

I see your point. But I often I cruise around, then find some stairs or banks where I might try jumps etc.
I don't really do a lot of real vert skating, so I don't really need full allrounders. I do street skating (in both senses of the word: "aggressive" and cruising) and I want to avoid paying for two pairs, keeping to pairs fit, and carrying around the other pair while cruising or skating from spot to spot. My new pair might be a "vert skate which is also OK for street skating", while my current pair could be called a "'recreational' skate which also is OK for vert skating".

On the other hand, for someone who packs his stuff into a car and spends the day either at some skate park or cruising around, it makes a lot of sense to have two pairs. (if he can afford it ...)

When I tried to create an allround skate, I used Krypto wheels with 93 A durometer. This was too hard for cruising and too soft for the ramp. In your situation I would definitely use soft wheels. I am curious regarding your experience with the other components. I'd also say that soft wheels are suitable for a bit of vert skating but wheels which are too hard aren't suitable for rough pavement.

I never had a problem with that. I often skated to a ramp with my street skates, carrying my heavy bag with the vert equipment (which includes a heavy photo equipment).

Here are some scans of questionable quality. (my scanner doesn't handle negatives well)
