I've never figured out why noone wears any guards. Then people quit skating because they got hurt. I felt like an idiot but I need to learn how to always land on my knee pads and use my elbows. I think I need to have those on consistently to ingrain this. The only time I fell was at the water fountain tripping over the dumb mat lol. I fell backwards but rolled on my butt onto my elbow. So didnt need to put my hand down. So was glad to have them otherwise might have felt the need to put my hand down on my bad arm. I almost never fall at the rink but there is always a 5 yr old that eventually tries to plow you over lol. I already want to go back! I wish rinks werent so pricey and far away since I'm not working. The dr. said no hard falls for another month so dont feel safe doing the streets yet. I hope my bf can get off work early tomorrow and wants to go rollerskating again. Lucky me, he said he wanted to take lessons there (cheapier then admission and free skating too) to learn to roll backwards but after snowboarding season. I think he likes rollerskates now too!

This is very exciting!! I'm glad you guys dont mind me posting my re-beginnings. I cant wait to post my first bowl skate also! :):):):):) I still have to get a video of me just carving and carving and carving. Life is so exciting again!!!! I'm stoked. I'm sore too lol.

I just noticed, this is the only picture where you have an elbow pad on your left elbow!! Are you doing what skateboarders do, and only wearing an elbow pad on the arm you think you'll fall on? Or is it just because you want to protect only your injured wing??

: I did this for almost 2 hours straight lol.

Oh that is my right arm actually lol. I guess I rotated the pic backwards. Yes, only put the elbow pad on my injured arm. I guess I should do both arms but never hurt myself in the rink before that needed much more then wrist guards and knee pads. But since I'm trying to unlearn putting my hands down ever, probably better to have elbows then wrist guards even. I will be the geek that goes in full armour I guess lol. I think its important for me to learn to use my pads on falls at all times so it will be natural on vert. I scrapped my knee pretty bad from falling one time since I'm used to falling on knee pads because that is ingrained.

biffsk8er: Not fully padded? (9. Feb. 2009 19:59)
I thought that might have been the case.

I personally would suggest that you wear both pads. Since your injured arm is not fully strengthened, it would be wise to fall to your stronger arm more, when you can. And because of that, you should learn to use the elbow pad to fall to, instead of your fore arm or wrist, as that will be stronger for a hard fall (and padded to boot!). Also, that will train you to reflexively use your elbow pads once you get back into skating vert.

I'm so happy you are skating again. :D

claudine: Not fully padded? (9. Feb. 2009 23:44)
Yes. thanks for the feedback! I'm getting my vert elbows adjusted. They are twice as thick as these so they are literally knee pads I'll be falling onto. I want to get it so I NEVER fall onto my hands unless its assisted by the elbows only from forward falls. There really isnt a safe way to fall onto hands. So even on insignificant falls I want to learn how to properly fall onto my pads at all times. Then its natural and I will stay safe. I will look silly having pads in a rink but who cares lol. I can skate as I please then.

BTW, just wanted to let you know that I've finally fully recovered from the knee surgery. Later in the day I picked up the speed around the corners. I really have to lean into the curve when doing crossovers going at faster speeds. Before the surgery that really hurt my knees. I felt zero pain! It took close to 5 months before that healed 100% but it did. I'm very happy for this! I love vert but speed skating and street skating are my second favs and great when I cant fall as hard. I really love the PD wrist guards too! I hope I dont use them now though lol.

: I will look silly having pads in a rink but who cares lol.

Indeed, who cares. It's very unpopular with street skateboarders to wear protection. Almost none of them does. "Gruppenzwang" I would call this in German. But one of the best street skateboarders, Jeremy Reinhard, doesn't care and wears pads. He knows what they are good for and his skating is beyond any doubt.

The reality with most kids though is that they quit by the time they are 18. Their knees are bad, etc. After seeing so many people getting knee/joint replacements, I am far beyond now caring. Many people stop skating or hold themselves back rather then look "silly." I've been teased since I was a kid for being small, I'm used to it so I tease myself too lol. Call me twiggy, spaz, olive oil, michellen girl, whatever lol, I love to skate and will. I dont mind, after all I can do my froggy plants one day again and all sorts of funny things on my skates. I may not be the best but I'm sure I'll entertain. :-D

Ya keep rolling and having fun!!! No matter what others do, keep giving the right example, it will reward you in time.
BTW, on your pict rolling sidestance, your skates seems quite far apart from each other, it might be just atransient, but if it's not, if you can, maybe try to skate with your feet closer, you will get a better balance/feeling on bowls.

cheers

You mean less bending of the knees? Or when I pump, I push the skates forward and backwards. I wasnt going fast sidestance since I didnt want to fall yet lol. I want to learn both ways one day but for the most part I will skate frontstance. I just like challenges. Usually I go sideways at the rink because then I wont get in trouble for skating too fast and its fun to do.

Today the weather is so nice. I want to rollerskate outside. But I will enjoy the bike today. I will ask my dr. monday if I can jump curbs and bomb down hills lol. :-D I've decided I will wear pads at all times now. Just not vert stuff for rink. Its nice to roll again for sure!

Hmmm?! I disagree. I skate side stance with my legs pretty far apart and I find it helps me to propel myself, as well as to help stabilize myself. When I am coasting, I will bring them closer together and stand up more....helps me to rest. It my be an individual preference, though.

My 2 cents,
Biff

Sure individual preference win, skate shape too, hey Claudine, so you have to try ;-) Irene might give a third advice.
For droping/landing vert I try to reduce that space, I have bad memories doing else on the 4m, landing on 10 balls... just my 2cts advice. Propelling on flat, skates a bit more appart, I agree with Biff ;-)

I will try to film on flat next time weather is good!!!

cheers
