The little bowl
I guess there isnt a place for me to ride then thats safe! I feel safer there since I'm VERY tiny and its hardly a big bowl to me. My friend there is a foot taller then me and 100 lbs more then me so I'm much smaller in comparison. I wish a vert skater were in the area to teach me in person what I"m doing wrong when I fall. I guess I have no choice that either I'm skating in a not safe bowl or I dont skate.

I think I'm stronger now then I credit myself for. I built my first bike today myself. At least I do very well. The mechanic said I've picked it up faster then the others he's taught and I get true a wheel w/in a half mm, so hopefully they'll keep me during this crummy recession!

: : This is the bowl I'm talking about in the video. This is the only bowl with mild transitions that dont go to vert. On the big bowls, they go to vert quickly and its easy to get up high with the waterfalls into the bowl. WHen I hit vert, that leads to faster, higher falls. This bowl is just simple slides.
:
: That's definitely a tough thing. The bowl in the video is very small and hardly suitable to train good falling technique. There just is no room for it and you still can do bad slams there. On the other hand, a big bowl with steep transitions is even worse for gentle practice. I don't know what to recommend in this situation.
:
: : Thanks Bernhard, I'll practice the slides! But this bowl looks safe?
:
: I remember a skateboard design that read "Unsafe at any speed". There's nothing to add to this. It's just true and a Mr. Wilson on a skateboard can result in very nasty injury. No height at all and speed Zero.
:
: : Everything else is steep. And my arm might not be strong enough to lift myself out of a 7 1/2 foot+ bowl when I'm tired lol. I hope I can ride once before insurance cancels. I have a nice fun line I do on this bowl. Today its raining and I'm sore lol
:
: Go for control. You should always be in control when riding your skates so that even a fall won't harm you. I know that's easy to say and not always achievable, but it should be the goal to aim at. Especially when you're not 13 anymore.

Stitches out, arm 100%, no letter from insurance company.

I rode the BMX and jumped some curbs and speed bumps. Then I went to the kiddie skatepark. Gosh I feel old there lol. Whats up with all the kids just going down one ramp and flipping the board to only miss it a zillion times? Then they stand there for 5 mins and just flip it. I dont get it, dont they like to move? Doesnt that get annoying to never make a trick lol? They dont do this crap at the bowls. The actually move and pump and stuff. So yes I love the bowls a lot more. I was good. Just rode the ramps, no tricks, no dropping in. Played it like a beginner. Made one lame fall forward and hit the elbow then my hand and musta missed a heartbeat but was fine. So glad a fall is done to get over the fear and hope no more lol.

I am not sure I like the PD gloves because I was pumping the half pipe and got to the top so dropped my knees to slide down. I lost a bit of skin on the palm side knuckle on my finger. That skate lite is like sandpaper on the hands and I didnt fall on it. So seems like there are no ideal wrist guards. I put my old ones back on lol, but took off the rear rigid guard. But I LOVE the elbows! The one time I fell, I didnt feel a thing. So then ripped it up fast in the street a bit. I guess I can kick my heels up some now while skating the streets? ;-D That was fun. I just had to remind myself from being away for such a long time to relax on the ramps and bend my knees.

Then I unicycled. Man, it was awesome!

I think I'll follow Roberts footsteps. Take it very slow. I'm starting as a beginner again to play it safe. Hope I can keep insurance! Irene will rank #1 forever cause I'm too old to push myself to be great. I just want to skate and be safe so I can do this a long time. I'll catch the high airs on the BMX I guess lol. I think I'll sleep well tonight. :-D

Dont worry, I'm still shaking in my skates lol. I just roll and carve and it will be this way a long time. I skate now on the level like its my first month skating the ramps. Or short time if insurance cancels me. No bowls/ramps then until I get it as I realize this IS dangerous! I might wait and try the baby bowl. Its a 4 to 4 1/2 foot roll in entry. But I might wait til next week and go with a friend. I'm actually digging the unicycle and feel safer on it for now. I just love rollerskating still. I hope by winter I can show some Popeye forearms on me!! :-D

Hip-Hip-Hooray! This was a nice thing to come home to see. I'm very happy for you.

Today, I had my very last follow up visit with my Ortho. She told me she is done with me. From here on out, I just need to strengthen my knee, and continue to work on my range of motion.

Cheers!

: I might wait and try the baby bowl.

In fact, the small ramps and bowl are more dangerous when you know controlled falls. To learn to control your falls, I recommend really big half pipes. Lots of space there to learn falling.

My thoughts too. Big ramps are less dangerous. You do not hit the ground so darn fast. Gives you time to prepare.

There are no big half pipes here, just big bowls. And thats where I hurt myself. I havent hurt myself on small stuff ironically. Every time I've injured myself its been on the bigger stuff. I dont fall hard if I'm close to the ground.

I agree w/B&B. Large bowls to carve, don't go high. The bigger curved walls gives you more space and time to fall right. Smaller, tight bowls pitch you down faster into the flatbottom....ouch

I can't really comment on the big bowls. I've seen some which very steep transitions which I deem dangerous for learning control. For this purpose you want to visit the softest transition available, ride it up a bit and practice falling on your knee pads. The ride up a bit farther, practice falling and so on. Of course you can stay close to the ground but if you want to get higher, you will want to survive it.

Dude, you are lucky! My Dr. wants me to go back to PT cause my elbow is still tight until I get the letter from insurance. If I have it then another surgery to break down scar tissue in my elbow and 3 months PT. Almost there lol.
