I built my very 1st pair of SK8s today!
: Thanks again everybody for bearing with me through yet another of seemingly pointless posts. I'm just so Stoked on actually building my own SK8s! I think they're gonna work too! I rolled around on both on patio & other than maybe adjusting my stance a bit wider, just in case, I think they're gonna work just fine.
: Now that lack of Toe-Stops on the other hand..........
: So, any advice from my ToeStop-Free friends would be appreciated. Before I bust my Ass!
: PEACE!!!!.............................Jay

Advice : Don't use toe stops. Extra weight and get in the way. :P Learn hockey slides, t-stops, wedge stops, etc. Or go to the video posted below.

btw, on the front trucks, I only put two bolts all the way through & into the boot. That way, my toes aren't smashed down from the very front bolts pulling the toe area down.

Jay: I built my very 1st pair of SK8s today! (7. Jul. 2009 07:17)
  Hi again, Everybody.
You're probably saying to yourself "1st sk8s??? I know Jay's had SK8s before" & yes, of course I do/have.
But I, unlike so many of my creative roller-friends, have never BUILT my own sk8s. In fact, until this year I'd always ridden stock derby-style sk8s with slight modification for my grind plates.
As you guys know (if you read my last post!) I went to SoCal this weekend. What I didn't mention was that in addition to getting a flat spot (and no spare wheels) I had an issue with my front truck on my right sk8. I was able to jury-rig (thanks mostly to Duke) & sk8. While it seems to be holding I'm afraid my kingpin is gonna snap @ anytime.
This got me thinking: what happens if I have a similar snafu @ RC?!? I was panic-stricken.
So, I went to my local sk8 shop for new wheels. I got some KILLER old school Powell Peralta Bones that are 64mm & 97A. Now, initially my plan was to get new wheels for my existing sk8s. But after scoring some killer Titanium Abec-9's @ a great price too, I thought, if my kingpin snaps mid RC-session, you're still screwed killer wheels & bearings or not. That's when inspiration struck me. I decided to build my own 'spare' pair of SK8s! Now, I needed trucks too! By this time the shop owner (a very cute woman about my age) was getting pretty amped. I mean as a rollerskater I'm buying TWO sets of everything I want. She's loving it. She even breaks out her bearing press from the ack room to put my bearings in for me. :)
So, I get home & start measuring & drilling holes.
Believe it or not, this is what I wanted to use for these skates boots-wise:
Probably Garbage.

Yeah this is Garbage

I know how tired they look, but these were my fav (& 1st!) ramp sk8s & I skated them almost 10 years til the boots strated to really come off the speed plate due to busted rivets. :(

Then I remembered. The tricky part is the mounting plate. And I had nothing. I was considering mounting the trucks right to my boots when I remembered my HMWP that I use for my sliders. I was off & running then. God Bless Dawnie, she let me go crazy for 3+ hours while she tended our son so I could humor myself with this construction attempt.

Here's my assorted parts:
Parts for new Vert Sk8s

More Parts View

I was pretty stoked on myself by this time thinking I had it licked. In no time I had my 1st sk8 assmebled & ready for a picture. Here it is:
New Sk8 sans Wheels

It was only after looking at this picture while still in my camera, NOT at the SK8 itself, that I noticed I was making a ToeStop-Free RollerSkate! Yes, I have those kind of moments sometimes. I AM a grandfather now!
But I was this far along, so I had to soldier on. So I put my killer Bones wheels on it & started on Sk8 number 2 (aka lefty), right after putting righty on & rolling around on my patio one-footed just to see how it felt. I liked it! Here's that 1st SK8 complete.
New Vert SK8 Side View

So the second one went together faster than the 1st (don't they always?) & I had a set of sk8s. Here they are:

Look Ma, No Toe-Stops!

Side View of New SK8s

And a comparison shot so you can see they're wider than current sk8s:

MUCH Wider!

I'm not sure if the res on these pics is high enough to see, but I'm actually 4 bolts/nuts short of having them fully done. I thought I could use shorter ones for the fronts as there's no heel, but was wrong. That's why I'm here posting to you guys instead of trying out my new SK8s! Tomorrow. I'll try to capture some footage but not sure if it'll be possible.

It is fun being creative with something that drives you. I always feel really good when making modifications to my skates, or motorcycle, anything really. I went through several attempts at grinders before settling on one thing that worked well. My plate and truck setup is still not making me happy though.
That is one tall pair of skates! and the distance from the base of the plate to the surface is really big too. I know that I would not be able to stand on coping to drop in without some modification. Did you happend to put them on a scale yet?
At any rate the effort will always benefit you, either from getting it perfect in one try or learning what does and does not work so well from first hand experience. This stuff is good for the soul.

I can T-Stop & hockey slide fine, but I use Toe-Stops to help run outta pools after falls, to arrest my motion backwards & to lock myself (so I don't move) at other times.I know I'm gonna try to use my non-existent toestops & faceplant, but hopefully only once!
: btw, on the front trucks, I only put two bolts all the way through & into the boot. That way, my toes aren't smashed down from the very front bolts pulling the toe area down.
: So, do you mount trucks to your plate with 4 bolts then just not go through boot with front 2 or?? The video was amusing though. Was that Hawaii? Looked like it. I lived on Kaua'i for almost 6 years.Gorgeous.
Thanks for advice...Wil attempt to implement it.

I AGREE! Duke told me to put toe stops on when I emailed him a long time ago and I've never regretted it. It makes life much easier. A must if you bowl skate and dont always pop out. Plus Roberts toe stop trick, think that looks cool! I like to bounce off the wall on them sometimes to get more speed. I think no toe stops is OK if you only do vert ramps and kiddie parks or ride bowls without bailing. I usually stop by spin turns but would have run over kids many times without the stops help. It saves wheels on hockey slides!! I cant afford new wheels all the time lol.

Nice work on skates! Important thing is to keep the trucks perfectly lined on the plate and mounted center to the foot so wheels are even on both sides. Its a shame RS Dave isnt here as I learned how to mount correctly from him. Now I dont trust others lol.

Hey Beer.
Welcome to the Forum! You've skated with Biff!Lucky man! I'll be skating with him later this month. Can't wait!:)
No scale yet. They feel comparable to my current sk8s though. As far as the height goes, I know they're high but think it'll be fine. I've skated everything from stock sk8s with that much gap between ground & bottom of boot or more to having less than 1/2 inch between ground & my sole. It doesn't seem to bother me much either way. Guess I'll know for sure by later today sometime!
Anyway, I hope your knee's not bad & heals fast so you can get back out there as soon as your sk8's healed too!
Good Luck. PEACE......Jay

Hey Joe.
Yeah I hope not too. I'm cautiosly optimistic though. Been using same material for sliders without flexing. We'll see. Video to come. Probably of me trying to use non-existent toe-stops & eating shit! LOL! Wait for it!
Keep it real in the land of Oz, Brother!

Irene! Just 3 weeks & 1 day & I'm picking you up from the airport!!!!Can't wait!!!
Yeah, I'm kinda deathly afraid of the lack of toestops. I may be in the bottom of a pool I can never get outta of! More likely I'll try to fakie stop & faceplant! I will bear in mind wider, more staggered stance. I know those new wheels, bearings & trucks are gonna be Scrwamers though! Fastness is good, right?!?LOL!
We missed you in South Bay. Everyone's eager for RC madness to commence. Talk to you soon.

Hi Claudine.
I'm a little apprehensive about the mounting job I've done. I guess I'll find out later today when rolling on some trannys. But on the flatland of my back patio they seemed to track true. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Last thing I need is some stupid major injury right before RC!
BTW: I LOVED that Green (Recycled tires)Bowl you posted the other day. It IS Screaming for rollerskates. I think you're the only local representative we have, so it's on you! Go, destroy it it & film it for us here!

I'll do it. I guess I will try to bring my tripod next time in case noone is there. Just remember I think God put me on earth to humor others with my skinny little self. ;-D I'm going to charge up my batteries just in case I can get someone at my kiddie park to film. I'll also have to see about my leg. Nothing serious, just a little tight in the muscle probably since I'm not used to explosive movements.

: : : It was only after looking at this picture while still in my camera, NOT at the SK8 itself, that I noticed I was making a ToeStop-Free RollerSkate! Yes, I have those kind of moments sometimes. I AM a grandfather now!
: : : But I was this far along, so I had to soldier on. So I put my killer Bones wheels on it & started on Sk8 number 2 (aka lefty), right after putting righty on & rolling around on my patio one-footed just to see how it felt. I liked it! Here's that 1st SK8 complete.
: : : New Vert SK8 Side View
: : :
: : : So the second one went together faster than the 1st (don't they always?) & I had a set of sk8s. Here they are:
: : :
: : : Look Ma, No Toe-Stops!
: : :
: : : Side View of New SK8s
: : :
: : : And a comparison shot so you can see they're wider than current sk8s:
: : :
: : : MUCH Wider!
: : :
: : : I'm not sure if the res on these pics is high enough to see, but I'm actually 4 bolts/nuts short of having them fully done. I thought I could use shorter ones for the fronts as there's no heel, but was wrong. That's why I'm here posting to you guys instead of trying out my new SK8s! Tomorrow. I'll try to capture some footage but not sure if it'll be possible.
: : : Thanks again everybody for bearing with me through yet another of seemingly pointless posts. I'm just so Stoked on actually building my own SK8s! I think they're gonna work too! I rolled around on both on patio & other than maybe adjusting my stance a bit wider, just in case, I think they're gonna work just fine.
: : : Now that lack of Toe-Stops on the other hand..........
: : : So, any advice from my ToeStop-Free friends would be appreciated. Before I bust my Ass!
: : : PEACE!!!!.............................Jay
: :
: : Wow, very impressive Jay! crazy skills hidden under the surface? those are burly...looks supa fast. just remember to keep your feet apart and don't forget you dont have stoppers!
:
: Irene! Just 3 weeks & 1 day & I'm picking you up from the airport!!!!Can't wait!!!
: Yeah, I'm kinda deathly afraid of the lack of toestops. I may be in the bottom of a pool I can never get outta of! More likely I'll try to fakie stop & faceplant! I will bear in mind wider, more staggered stance. I know those new wheels, bearings & trucks are gonna be Scrwamers though! Fastness is good, right?!?LOL!
: We missed you in South Bay. Everyone's eager for RC madness to commence. Talk to you soon.
: PEACE......................................Jay

btw, those trucks are so hot! You can get the mounts online. We all were terrified of our first build I bet and still am every time I drill. So that and the insane cost of boots now will have me wearing mine til they go. Just do flat ramps first. I rolled mine on the kitchen floor first time to make sure they rolled straight. I had some holes in my plates first time. 2nd time I drilled them and that was scary.

: I can T-Stop & hockey slide fine, but I use Toe-Stops to help run outta pools after falls, to arrest my motion backwards & to lock myself (so I don't move) at other times. I know I'm gonna try to use my non-existent toestops & faceplant, but hopefully only once!

***I can help show you techniques on getting out of bowls w/o toe stops when I get there.***

: : So, do you mount trucks to your plate with 4 bolts then just not go through boot with front 2??

**Correct.**

The video was amusing though. Was that Hawaii? Looked like it. I lived on Kaua'i for almost 6 years.Gorgeous.
: Thanks for advice...Wil attempt to implement it.

**Funny thing, I used to skate in outdoor marathons with Eddie Matzger years ago!! And now I find his training videos online, about inline!! I can't remember if he ever skated quads though.**

: It saves wheels on hockey slides!! I cant afford new
: wheels all the time lol.

The trick to not ruining wheels while hockey sliding / stopping is to make sure that the wheels are always rolling at least a little bit. I never get flat spots.

You always need just the tiniest bit of angle when hockey sliding. Never have your wheels at exactly a 90° angle from your direction of approach or you WILL get flat spots. Also, it helps to buy good wheels.

Hey Irene,
About out the door to try new sk8s AGAIN with some slider blocks added......but wanted to tell you that I THINK Tim's in Colorado now. Has a company that builds skateparks if I'm not mistaken. Gotta go sun's set. Temp might actually be under 100 now. Maybe.
