Hi,

Irene wrote in post 463:
: Post a pic of the new setup when you're done.

Got my ACS-430 hangers today; they fit and skate well. Thanks for the tip! I was thinking about going all metal, then saw pics of your skates, and read that they are Variflex plates plus ACS hangers, which is a great compromise/solution for me.

Here's a pic:
www.pinkjuice.com/rollerskating/pics/tobi/
(.jpg); a better pic to come soon. The other stuff (grind bars etc) will take a while.

Soon I'll get a set of 500s; I'll see if I like them even more :)

In case my Variflex plates break, or if I want to throw together a second pair; does Variflex still make em? If not, I'd probably look into other non-metal alternatives, such as
Starway FORMULA 2 Zytel (carbon-fiber).

I'm excited about Brian's skates; any news?

Tobi

Glad you like this combo setup. Don't know if Variflex is still making stuff. I have 2 sets and have never broken anything on the plate. I just spoke to a metal guy and he suggested using stainless steel that he would cut into bars for me. Let you know how that goes when it's done.

I still need 2 more ACS 580 hangars to complete a second pair of skates. Where did you find yours? Do ACS hangar fit into these Starway FORMULA 2 Zytel plates?

Irene,

OK! I'm also trying to find some metal guy who can help me with grind bars, and a thin plate between the shoes and the baseplates (frames). Years ago a bike mechanic welded the little square tubes under the jump bars for me; perhaps the grind bars could rest on them.

... secret sauce ;)

I'll give you the contact offlist.

Isn't that "hanger" not "hangar"? Again; english is not my native language, so I appreciate help.

I don't know if they fit ... perhaps they could tell you via email? Tell me when you find out.

Tobi, I am in working on it still and things are looking bright, stay in touch and I will let you know when there is something more. It could be the end to all of these pieces & parts. Keep on ripping it! Brian

Sounds great! I'm really excited; will they be light, will the components be available, what will they look like ...

... or will the be monolithic in some way? Soon we might know ...

I think it's so great that you as a pro rollerskater are working on some skates; I can imagine the result could get things moving in the quad world :)

: Hi,
: Brian W. e-mailed me and asked me to call tracker trucks and give them more feedback about the need for extreme skates. So I made exploded views of my skates and sent the pics to tracker. I then, even called and made an appointment to talk to them, and traveled from Colorado to California to personally show them my model. As I was leaving the guy said, well they look a little rough but I'll think about it. Basicly he thought that trackers old attempt at extreme skates which was like the old artical I wrote for the english mag in "78" how to make skates out of 4-acs 430's and a plate. I thought that if I had given my design to Tracker that I should at least share my skates with people who care enough to have a forum.
Suregrip roller skate plates with indi 101's w/a jump bar foating in between the cushons and plastic slider plates bolted to the jump bar. I studied all the kids skates at this ramp in Leone, France. and came back to america to build what I thought was the best combination of all the ideas that I saw. Here it is I will be putting more pics on Pinkjuice soon.

Hi Tim,

very interesting post and pic!

What model are the Sure-Grip plates?
(Can you find em here or here here?)

Are those the trucks?
Did you have to modify the pivots of the independent hangers to make them fit?

: Yes, those are the indis and the plate is the super X sure grip. I did grind the pivot of the truck down to lower my center of gravity. They worked as/is without grinding but I wanted to lower the CG and it made the geometry of the trucks fit the plate perfectly. I grind about a 1/4" off of the length of the pivot, and reduced the diameter of the pivot to fit the hole and plastic cushon in the pivot hole so that I did not have to customize the plate at all.

That's what I thought ... and that's why Irene (and I and others) use ACS hangers. Getting hangers that fit the small pivot holes of current rollerskate plates, or grinding the pivots to be smaller in diameter to make them fit is all a hassle. It would be so great if future rollerskate plates would have pivot holes the same size as skateboard truck plates ... then we simply could use any skateboard truck and pivotcup. Kingpins also should be compatible. But since freestyle skateboarding seems to have died, there aren't many small skateboard trucks available; this Indy 101 and the small Tracker truck are the only ones I know of.

I'm really looking forward to seeing things improve :)

Hey< I purchased a pair of ACS roller skates with the vans canvas boot back in the early 1980's. I mofified them by putting a set of ACS Lite 580 trucks on them with Sims Comp II wheels and bearings. The skates originally came with the ACS 430 trucks, so the swap was made without modification other than just switching the trucks. I have since, just recently, lost those skates and am in the process of putting together another pair if I can obtain some trucks like those. I have two 580 hangers, but I need two more. If you could help, I would appreciate it.:

A couple of years ago I mentioned that I had a pair of ACS rollerskates. They originally came standard with ACS 430 truck/hangers, ACS base plates on Vans canvas boot. I modified them with the ACS LITE 580 truck/hangers. I bought those rollerskates in the 80's. I had the SIMMS Comp II 64mm wheels with SIMMS racing bearings. I did manage to lose them after several years of trouble free skating. I recently purchased a set of Riedell racing skates and modified them by installing ACS 651 truck/hangers. They installed without any modification. The wheels are KRYPTO 63.5 CSI's. They have racing bearings and spacers. I really like these. Good for speed and downhill. I really like chasing the chicks on bikes. A lot of the younger kids on their BMX bikes try to keep up, but they can't keep up. Down on the flats, I even had a few dogs try to catch me. These/those two skates were/are so comfortable that I would put them on and could skate all day without any discomfort or blisters. Skated the Maryland Marathon (26 Miler) once. I was still skating hours afterwards.

Wish I had obtained a copy of that which was an opening event for that skateboard park. Playing tag in the bowls with other skaters was fantastic.
