Kay: Newbie needs skate advice? (10. Oct. 2010 16:30)
 Hi,

I've been skating for a few months now. (I skated as a little kid, but since that was like 12 years ago, I don't know if it counts haha.) I'm so happy to be skating again, I LOVE IT, and I'm ready to try other stuff besides going around in circles at the roller rink.

Some of the girls at the rink have asked me to join their new roller derby league. I've promised that as soon as I get some health insurance I'll give it a try. Looking around on YouTube, I found out about vert skating and it seems a lot more fun to me, since I'm not super into team sports. On the other hand... my physique (at 5'6" and almost 200lbs) is probably more suited to derby. :)

Right now I'm skating on rental inline skates from the rink (their quads are GARBAGE), plus some $3 Rollerblades I bought at Goodwill for outdoor trail skating.

So I want to invest in some nice quads of my own.

Could you guys suggest skates for a beginner who is going to (eventually) try both derby and vert skating?

THANKS!

  Hi Kay!
Welcome BACK to rollerskating! :-)
www.skates.com has just about EVERY kind of Pre-Fab rollerskate you could ever want. www.sincityskates.com is a derby-owned company & will have probably everything you would want/need to start out. Most of us vert skaters skate completely custom or modified rollerskates that we make and/or modify ourselves. Vert Skating IS More FUN than Derby (in my opinion) but I'm also not much of a team player....as many people will attest.
If you DO start skating in skateparks this is a GREAT resource. Also, I run a "World" on www.gravity.com for ALL things Rollerskate & I make lots of Tutorial Videos specifically designed to get novice skaters basic park skills & tricks. Like this one for Spine ramps:

It's all Free just cuz I LOVE vert-rollerskating & exposing new people to it. You can check them ALL out here:
http://www.gravity.com/rollerskate
I'm ALWAYS adding new content on there for derby & rookie skatepark skaters.
Get some quads & get out there!
PEACE,
Jay

Welcome to the forum!! I'm glad you found your way here!!

It helps to know your preference on skates : High ankle support boots or low? Did you ever speed skate or did you just skate casually?

I would recommend 265 Riedell skate boots if you like low ankle support speed boots. Also, for years, I skated skate parks with the same equipment that I used for basic outdoor skating. However, after years of this, I realized that harder wheels are better for skate parks and have since switched to harder wheels.

Here is a pic of the boots I like :

Ramps are more fun then derby, lol. Ima girl too and rather hit the parks anyday. Round and round in circles gets boring to me.

Anyway, how about calling rollergirl.ca? I would get a pair of skates like either the 265s or carerras if you have narrow feet that are adaptable to wider trucks/grind plate. Lisa is a good person to talk to. I get my roller skating stuff from her, shes very helpful!!

Good luck and welcome!! You can email me any lame questions you want as I'm still fairly much a newbie and remember my first rolls and slams lol.

 Hi Kay,

welcome to this forum!

It's good that you skated as a kid, I wish I had. You never learn like a kid any more, but the fun in roller skating never stops.

: Could you guys suggest skates for a beginner who is going to (eventually) try both derby and vert skating?

It's OK to try stuff with some pair of skates. But there is no such thing as a pair of skated suitable to everything. Back in the times (TM), I tried to have a pair of skates equally well suited for cruising the streets and for riding half pipes. It turned out that they weren't really good for neither. Now I have a pair for cruising and a pair for ramp riding. It's OK to misuse them outside of their purpose occasionally, but it doesn't really work.

Therefore my advice would be: Get a pair for ramp skating (it's best to build them yourself or have them built) if that's what you're up to. It's OK to try your first moves on any skates but you soon will want to move to more suitable skates as you progress.

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the advice!

Jay -- I'll definitely check out those sites!

biffsk8r -- I haven't tried any short boots so I don't know yet. I'm a very casual skater right now.

Claudine -- Rollergirl.ca looks like an awesome resource! :D

Bernhard -- That's good to know. I really like the idea of making my own skates, it sounds like a fun challenge. I already found a few tutorials on here and other places so I think I'll give that a try!

Wow! Some people have all the luck! With such a local park, you are bound to become a great roller skater. Take care, however. It\'s really a good idea to have health insurance!
