RollerCon Skatepark Tour
Hi Lisa,

thanks for the picture! The sheer numbers are amazing. And much more so for being girls! Here in Germany there always was at most one girl who was skating vert. Much more girls in Spain, obviously. And now this!

Big kudos to the girls and to the "teachers".

RollerGirl: RollerCon Skatepark Tour (20. Sep. 2007 00:32)
 Hey Everyone,

This is Lisa aka RollerGirl, out of Vancouver, Canada.

I went to Vegas in August for RollerCon, a big roller derby convention, and as part of the annual convention there is a skatepark tour. It was amazing! One of the nights there were 35 people skating the ramps on quads. I was blown away, I have never skated (parks) with so many roller skaters before. We didn't think to take a picture until most of the folks had already left, but here are 12 of us sitting at the edge of a 12 foot concrete bowl. This is the Hollywood (i think..) skatepark in Vegas..

In the pic you will see me (in the center in pink), with Lee Ettinger, Jay the Roller Skater and Duke Renie (third from the right). The gals are all derby girls and some of them are getting really good. Lee, Duke and Jay are great teachers it seems! They had girls dropping in that night, who had never been in a skatepark before.

I wish I'd been there! I've been wanting to skate with other girls that can really skate. Skated with the derby girls tonight but it wasnt fun for me. I took off, and left them way behind. I had noone to skate with still. I got bored and left early. I was hardly pushing...

 Hey Bernhard!

How's it going? It's been ages since I have chatted with you. Are you skating much these days?

Roller Derby is freaking huge in North America....there are 300 derby leagues in the US, each with about 30-100 members and those numbers are growing all the time. Lots of these gals are really good skaters, have full protective gear, know how to fall and have no fear. So it isn't surprising that there is a growing movement of derby girls turned ramp skaters. Here in Vancouver, I have a group of about 15 girls and 3 guys that I am teaching.

I expect that the skatepark tour at RollerCon next year will be insane. It was already crazy to show up at a skatepark with 35 quad skaters. The skateboarders just stood aside with their mouths gaping!!!

Not all the girls that wanted to come to the skatepark tour this year were able to make it either. There was supposed to be a shuttle bus that took the gals from an outdoor evening scrimmage event to the nightly skatepark tour. The shuttle never happened....so girls had to bus, carpool or take a cab to the skateparks. Next year the shuttle bus will be running.....imagine 60- 75 quad skating girls showing up at the parks....in fishnets and mini skirts! It is going to be a circus!

 Yeah Lisa,

its been some time ago ...

I'm trying to skate at least once a week and regain my form from 2005. Last year I couldn't skate, but I am happy to be skating a mini ramp again (the one in Kirchzarten).
Last Sunday I slammed my shinbone on the coping. It hurts when I touch it, so I'm trying to avoid touching it. ;-)

Funny how big roller derby is in America. It nowhere near this in Germany, but there are some roller derby girls. I was even asked to create a roller derby forum at Sk8Mag.de, which is now operational, but sees very little traffic till now.

I'm happy you are skating again. I guess hurting some part of the body means you are on the right way back to shape.

The photos of the Roller Derby are amazing. I can't imagine that.

This forum is awesome. Thank you again, Bernhard.

wow, I just stumbled across this forum.

I only made it out that night and the night before. That was amazing, thanks for the pic rollergirl. (I'm the one to the left of jay)

I can't skate right now, so I've been compensating by dreaming about skating and preparing to return when I heal up. (i sprained my ankle pretty bad up at the olney park in maryland over a month ago and messed up some ligaments)

 Hey Holly!

It is great to hear from you again :-D

Yikes, sorry to hear about your ankle...hope it heals quick!

I am horrible with names, and I don't remember the names of a lot of the gals in this pic. Can you name any of them for me?

Thanks!

RG
