installing ramp trucks/jump bar, washer question
: I have the bottom cushion on by the plate, just not under the jump bar by the top nut. Like in the image, but instead of her grindbars, I'm using the 2 jump bars. Looks like this but with my jump bars instead. Is that OK? If not, how do I slice it evenly?

claudine: installing ramp trucks/jump bar, washer question (29. Sep. 2007 04:02)
I am putting on the ramp trucks (got them!) and using 2 jump bars as my grind bar for now. But even with the softest cushions on there, with the 2 bars on, I dont have room for the last washer before the jump bar. Is this OK? When I got my first aggressive skates with rollergirl's grind bars, there was no washer between the bushings and grindbar either. They looked like this:

http://www.rollergirl.ca/usdcart/images/superx-grind-side.jpg

So it was plate, washer, bushing, truck, bushing, grind bar, nut. Now I have it as plate, washer, bushing, truck, bushing, 2 jumpbars, nut. I cant get the nut fully on if I put the washer underneath it. It seems fine but just want to double check. Cant wait to roll on them! Its cooled off and skating couldn't be any better right now!! Had a FANTASTIC skate day today. :-D

Don't go without the bottom washer. Your cushions will get chewed up in no time. You need a thinner bottom cushion. You can just slice a little bit off the one's you have now. Don't do this with the top cushions though. That would change the geometry of the truck and the top cushion would not sit in it properly.

I think you are all amazing for being able to put together your skates. I got very interested in putting together something, but after seeing how hard it is I decided that it is overkill. In the old days, many skaters did not have anywhere to buy anything so they put together their own setups. I think it is awesome, but I have decided just to stick with what I have. I met a medal worker on OMA and he said he would make me a plate, but I don't know what I would do with it and I don't think it would make a difference. I could be totally wrong, but I really don't think my skate set up with change my skating at all. For the first time in my entire skate life, I have wide trucks. I am totally stoked on my skates and I can grind, but other than that my skating has not changed. I grew up on stock Chicago skates and then switched to speed skates. I know have a speed boot with some sort of plate, a grind bar and wide trucks with skateboard wheels. I really don't notice a difference. I think the grind bars would be cool, if I did major plate slided, but I don't. I was always a pop off coping guy.

Hey, if it aint broke, dont fix it!

My new setup helps a lot though. The longer-wider trucks really allows me to throw my whole body into things and skate much more aggressively, so I get much more speed and height. Its SOOO much more fun now!! It also decreases the times I fall by about 90%! That in my book is amazing. I rarely fall now. Then my knee pads allow me to skate harder, no pain, no worry. Love em! So it doesnt really make me a better skater per say, but it allows me the opportunity to improve much quicker and skate harder and faster, enjoy myself more and be injury free. But I was told I've improved a lot so maybe it has. :-D

OK, plus its fun and rewarding. And I can tailor it to my own needs/body. I really dig building stuff myself by hand. My next set up in another year will be more out of fun then necessity. I would build my own house if I had the time/money!! I already built most my furniture, etc. I enjoy it.

Bernhard: installing ramp trucks/jump bar, washer question (29. Sep. 2007 11:18)
If you want to do this "two jump bars" thing, you should try to install longer king-pins. Then you could still put on the top washers.

Well, LIsa said it should be fine. How would it cause problems? If so I will look into it. Would I just get a longer bolt for a king pin? Thanks! I'm testing them out today. :-D

I can't tell, since I never tried such a set-up and also know no one who did. Lisa says it's no problem, Dave says your cushion will be destroyed very quickly. I don't know.

Yes, if you can find them. But I trust that you have your ways of locating longer bolts.

Well, he hasnt responded back yet but I think he was refering the to the cushions by the plate. I was told its OK and its how Lisa sets up her grind bars.

Anyway, I took it out for a 2 1/2 hour spin lol, they rode PERFECT! I couldnt ask for a better ride. I'm in love with this ramp trucks. No complaints really about how they handle. I think they are OK without the washer cause the metal grind bars act as a washer. The cushions do not rub on anything. Even so, cushions are cheap and I have an extra pair so if thats it, its not that big of a deal. Like I said, handles better then expected!

But it seems like this wont be the last of my set ups. After riding it today, I was wishing my plates could have been turned out more so they might pull a touch outwards. Not yet ideal for sidestance which I eventually wanna do too. And when I get better, I think I will want the wheels pushed to the end more for vert. Not necessary now. Plus, for some reason today, my wheels felt slick. I think its because the weather has cooled and the rubber ramps arent sticky. So now my wheels I put on are too small since I switched to softer onces. The size seems to slow things down more then the softness since my oak street skates have soft wheels but they larger and rode faster. So one day I would like skateboard wheels too. Just because I find its very hard to find an appropriate roller skate wheel. So I think next time around I will build the plate with skateboard trucks since the roller skate plates dont accomplish this as well. The skateboarders thought my new trucks were COOL!

So-far, this is definitely the best setup that I've rode on!! Just wish my legs wouldnt tire out lol. I could skate all day.......... I couldnt be happier! :-D Thanks for the input.

Looks like your kingpins and maybe even your jump bars hang lower than your hangers, that's gonna make grinding a bit trickyer. Longer kinpins will make this worse.Maybe some grind king king pins would help and mounting some plastic rails off of your plate mountung bolts would do the trick.Just my 2cents worth(probly worth just that to).

cheers joe

I am new so not doing much grinding yet, just need it for stalls right now. Next summer I think I will build a plate with freestyle minis and use skateboard rails or something else. This was just a temporary set up til I"m better. But its about even with the hangers. My feet arent big so not sure if my wheels would hang up if it were by the plate???

I thought of putting a rail on top! May be later. Right now they are out of stock with rails and my wallet is resting lol. By next summer I should be ready for real grinding though.

No. The bottom cushion is the one closest to the ground when your wheels are sitting on the ground.

So I slice the cushion by the nuts, not by the plate correct? Okey...... Thanks.
