: : I did this today. My body needed a rest so this was a good way to rest. Is this a stall or grind? Putting it up on my site. I might just finish up Irene now and touch up the others, but if theres another good pic, I might be able to do one more lol. Skating photos are so awesome for me to work with!!

It's a grind. Brian is great with grinds. And your paintings are awesome. I like watching how your gallery develops.

Thanks for correcting me! Its hard on a photo to know if its a grind or a stall. I finished up Irene too so I might do another grind one of Lisa if she has a larger image for me to work with, if not I will check one of your photos again! Or I might just "fill in" the missing info lol. Next summer I will have the best skating t-shirts around! :-D

Its a free hand photoshop painting. I put the image next to the one I'm working with. Its easy in that program to adust the image to get a near likness, distort, blur, erase, move, paint on top and make transparent layers. Painting you have to let it dry unless you are just doing a tonal sketch with mineral spirits so I just go with my natural distortions usually. I"m just too impatient and like to put the paint on thick lol. In art school, we learned how to measure to get accuracy too, sometimes I use it, sometimes I just eyeball it. I might do one more, thanks! I'm going to print them on t-shirts this winter. I will look COOL. :-D

Shweet, I likes!

Have you thought about working with Duke's "Dying Breed" tshirts?

I know he's always looking for new graphics. Keep up the great work!

I tend to do stuff just to please myself now cause theres so much unpleasant crap to deal with if you try to market things and usually no money in it in the end, sometimes a loss. Its a rough business. I'll think about it. I finished your image last night too, its on my website and I think its cool. Not sure if it needs cool (temp) colors in it to balance.

Now I need to come up with text to finish. :-D I might do a more graphic one of Lisa grinding next! Then when kids say I should get aggressive skates, I can show them on my shirt lol. This is fun for me........

 Claudine, that is some awesome work. So, that is basically digital art? My dad has done some cool stuff with that. I guess there is a pad that you can draw on? I don't know a thing about silk screening and the costs. They have places in the mall here that you can bring a picture and they will print it on a shirt. We also have places where you can get 5 quality T-shirts for $10. I am guessing the silk screen set up is what is expensive. If their were more of us, I would say we should all chip in and order some shirts, but there are not enough of us.

 The software I use, you grab a brush or you can make your own for a certain texture, choose a color from the palette and use a pen on a presurized tablet, paint away! Its fun and less costly then buying oils and canvas when youre broke lol. Easier to change, undo too. I always wish there was an undo button in oil painting!

But I can print them on transparencys which I then iron on I think. I have a nice printer. Just need to find these. I think Michaels or something will have them. I did the images letter size, 300 pixels, CMYK, so they should print well. I need some text now though.

Thanks for the complement. It makes me feel good people like them! I thought my style would go well with vert skating! :-D Yeah, Brian is an awesome skater, thats why I did him.

 Wow, you did Brian? Just kidding and I know it was a bad joke. Since I can't skate I have been hitting the booze again. I am in so much pain and need a chiropractor, but don't have insurance and don't know of anyone since I moved. By the way, I just submitted a request for information for AFLAC. I heard it is good and want to see how much it costs. Before I start trying my old tricks, I want to know I will be covered if I get hurt. I want to skate so badly, but I am in serious pain. I don't know how these professional athletes do it. Pain pills might help, but how can they function?

 Hahahaha yes, and when you get a picture of yourself doing a flip, I'll do you too!! ;-P

Yeah, I could push through the pain and skate but no medical means I have to lay off. If I saw a Dr, thats what they would say, DONT SKATE TIL YOUR IN PAIN lol. I just love it so. I might have to skate an hour tomorrow lol. I'll chill this weekend, do some art and web stuff. I'm dying to do some stalls and I think I've figured out how to do a simple handplant. But its more like a roundoff. Gee, and I was on a roll....... I was so high!

Normally grinds are movements on trucks, but I would also guess you'd call a movement on metal plates like this from Rollergirl a grind. I have always the imagination that a grind is a movement metal on metal (or stone), but I am not a native speaker of the English language so I could be horribly wrong. Slides are movements with plastic. Stalls can be done on either axles or plates. There is just no movement.

Hey guys I rekon it's based on the skateboard terminology were a grind is on the trucks even if you have plastic copers on and a boardslide is across the guts of the board/skate even if your running alloy rails. Stalls are just that, however terms like 5/0,rock'n'roll and disaster are also used for different techniqs.Even inliners call sideways moving slides slides and forward ones grinds from memory.
anyhoo I hope I have'nt confused you more.

Yup, that's probably the source where I get my undertandings of trick naming from.

The inliners I know call all their moves grinds. I usually tease them by telling them that they can't possibly do any grinds but "only" slides. ;-)

I find this whole subject of trick naming rather interesting. I guess it isn't so well developed with the roller skaters because we are so few.

 I suppose if we get completely literal, then you can grind and stahl on both plates and trucks. : )

 Yes, I'm more confused now! I thought:

grinds = "move";
stalls= "still";
slides = "(move+ plastic)"

(Programming humor hahahaha!) So grinds and stalls for me isnt so aparent via photo. With inliners, they are so big on terminology, a new name for every little movement. I guess being so dispursed and few, we have more freedom to be creative and not follow a set list of predefined tricks. Well, glad this came up cause now I can tease the inliners that they dont grind, only SLIDE, lol!

That's almost my view. Except that I'd say that a grind has to bring some hard surfaces (metal on metal or metal on concrete) to bring about that grinding sound. But now I understand why Robert's terminology is a bit different: he has quite some inline experience and the inliners call every movement a grind. In rollerskater terminology that would all be slides.

: I guess being so dispursed and few, we have more freedom to be creative and not follow a set list of predefined tricks.

Absolutely. Creativity rules in skater land!

: Well, glad this came up cause now I can tease the inliners that they dont grind, only SLIDE, lol!

That't the spirit: When they tease you, tease them!

BTW: Sometimes I express the movement in my pictures. There are at least two photographic tactics to do this: strobo flash and second curtain flash combined with long-time exposure, creating a trailing slur.

I hope I win the lottery soon cause now I want to travel and get back into photography, make art from it, not to mention skate with all the roller skaters out there and all the different places. What I did in high school, I was a yearbook photographer, is move the camera with the athlete to give it some speed. I never messed with flash. I did the sports outside sometimes! I didnt keep up with photography after high school due to lack of a dark room. I liked to develop the photos myself, mostly black and white I did. I then colored some tinting them with markers. I still have a photograph or two up in my old high school!
