hey Robert,

when you coming over for coctails lol? I need relaxants for pain lol. :-P Not too much pain now, more stiff, good, one more week maybe.

: I am almost 39 years old. I have not skated for a week because of a neck and back problem that I get periodically. I thought his would heal my sore thigh and it still is pretty sore with out skating for a week. I think the answer is that being old sucks and we just have to deal with the pain.
:
: : I feel pretty darn old today. I called my coach from college last night since I dont understand this injury. I skated Monday and maybe also Tuesday (maybe not, forgot lol), just super tight muscles, took Wed off, Thurs. evening I was in pain. I wake up, it doesnt hurt, just tight/stiffness, then I guess the tendon inflames and it gets really sore by the end of the day. So in the morning I think I can skate in another 2 days, at night I think 2 more weeks, maybe more.
: :
: : Well, he actually didnt realize how old I was. He said when you get older, things take longer to heal and your body doesnt take injuries as well. "You're not 20 anymore" grrrrrrrrrr..... Plus I'm extremely hyperactive, so even when sendatory, I move a lot, on my feet a lot, walk a lot, so leg injuries are tough for me to rest. Cant help it.
: :
: : He also thought strength training was a good idea and my hamstrings are weak, but he said 2 sets 10-12 after I'm healed while I read online for gymnasts, they recommend as low as 3 reps. And flexibility.
: :
: : So am I just getting old? Do I need to skate only ever other day if I'm going to go so hard to prevent overuse injuries? Or do this temporarily til I'm in shape? Will strength training, streching, warming up solve the problem and if so what strength training program should I focus on?
: :
: : I dont want to slow down. But is this needed? How do I get younger lol? I guess its not even been a year, so is this just being out of shape since I havent been active like this in many years....I hope? Irene, how do you do it or do you have aches and pains that keep you from rollin too? Sorry to gripe, I see my skates and its torture. I WANNA SKATE. I dont like swimming, I sink like a brick. The only thing that floats on me is my head lol.

Older === more time to recover, to do new tricks (but less to understand how to do them), and much more 'endurance' to practice,... as my father always told me, and now I begin to feel it, even if I have 20 a 2nd time....
5/6 hours sessions (Rsk8 or windsurf) are not a problem now, but were hard when I was 20 (same weight). Think endurance and knowledge improved.... But 2 hours after a good session I'm quite sleepy.... a good night and 2 resting (or working) days are good for me to fill up the batteries (muscles and brain). It's not easy to find the good life cycle length and not overcharge your body.
Have fun!!!!

 OK, understand.

Now that I think of it, when I started running at 16-17, I had runners knee, went to the podiatrist for orthotics, lots of getting in shape injuries. Then when I got good, still couldnt run hard everyday. Tendonitis in ankles, surgery on feet later, etc. I couldnt keep up to do what it takes to make it real big. But skating is more skill.

I think I need more strength conditioning. And to realize that my mind wants hard every day, maybe my body says every other is good. I think I've always been this way so its not just age. Less often is not a problem when I'm working again, but too much free time now. I was skating everyday til I was in pain and could hardly walk lol. Guess its my fault lol? I feel like I'm going to the amusement park when I skate, not exercising, so its hard to take days off.

My first lifting session, he told me to eat up good afterwards, and now its serious nap time lol.

Now that I'm into it, weights is perfect if injured. Now my muscles are really tired out and I'm happily exhausted like I've skated. Skating is tons strength I can tell. I'm going to be set by spring to do incredible handplants! I'll also work on inversions now.

Well, the injury is not necessarily lack of strength. He said my wirey appearance is deceiving. I have very small bones/frame so a lot of me is actually dense muscle. I impressed him how much I could lift! Seems like the injury was from lack of recovery, and tightness in that one muscle. And probably a muscle imbalance. So stretching twice a day from now on. More warm ups/cool downs. Its healing I can tell. Now I'm getting stronger! I'll be back better then ever. I feel so much better!

Weights seem better then swimming for me. I dont feel worn out after swimming. I'll keep this up all winter. Its easier for me to get my lungs back but takes time/work to get strength, power and flexibility. I was feeling bummed that age was taking over. I think I just need a touch more recovery time, and work more on flexibility.
