I am not alone!
All Right!,

Another Canadian roller skater just like me. I'm in Brantford, Ontario. (Remember the good old days when we could just call ourselves roller skaters instead of quad skaters.) I'm the only quadder in my neck of the woods right now, but the younger kids are interested when they see me going by. I like to downhill skate wherever I can find a good slope. I'm hoping to get over to the halfpipe in our town next year after the winter. There's no roller rink in our town, it was converted to a bingo hall years ago, so I have to do all my skating outdoors. Our weather has been excellent for skating lately. December 7 and I'm still outside skating.

I have always loved rollerskating and this year started to do vert skating. People look at me like I'm a freak because they have never seen anyone riding rollerskates in a half pipe. I live in Vancouver, Canada and there just isnt anyone else in town that does this. I am very happy to find out that there are others as crazy as me. I have a pair of used Bauer Oak Street skates with old Independent trucks that I scored off a friend.
I will try to get some shots of me skating to add to your collection.

 Hi Lisa,

only two days ago, I started this forum and already it find other vertical rollerskaters. I'm really stoked!

: People look at me like I'm a freak because they have never seen anyone riding rollerskates in a half pipe.

People looked amazed when I tried inlines in a ramp ten years ago. But the inline stuff just wasn't up to vert skating in those days and so I sticked to roller skates.

: I live in Vancouver, Canada and there just isnt anyone else in town that does this.

There are very few roller skaters in America. Before the inline boom, there was a very active vertical roller skater scene in Europe. But the interest in roller skating seems to be on the rise again.

: I am very happy to find out that there are others as crazy as me.

Yeah. You have to be determined. But it is great fun!

: I have a pair of used Bauer Oak Street skates with old Independent trucks that I scored off a friend.

I just had to go down do the cellar to fetch my old Bauer skates (I attach a photo of them). It's a long time since I used them, but there are still a lot of memories attached to them.

: I will try to get some shots of me skating to add to your collection.

I can't wait to see them.

Lisa: Skating in Canada (23. Dec. 2001 04:05)
 Hi Roller Skater Dave,
We are lucky here in Vancouver, there are at least ten outdoor skate parks in and around the city and it is possible to skate all year. Except when it rains of course....... I am 23 and have been roller skating for 18 years. Do you skate with stoppers and if so where the hell do you get them from? I rely on them for dropping in and climbing out of bowls when I bail and stopping of course. I go through a lot of them and buy used old skates just for the stoppers. Sometimes I use the hardware for other things but I am getting a bigger collection of trashy old skates than I want. Any suggestions?

Wow. I wish I had started with 5 years! I have been more like 21 when I started.

You can get Kryptonics stoppers from Starway in Switzerland. I will add a resource page and put their web address there. Maybe you can get them also from Kryptonics directly. Or the folks there can tell you a dealer in or near Vancouver.

I don't need stoppers for dropping. I would imagine that there is no coping where you drop and therefore the stoppers are a real help. A roller skating friend of mine has used his stoppers for dropping when he started. But now he has switched to the same technique like me. For me, it works like this: First I put my rear foot at the coping so that it won't roll away (the whole rear skate is on the platform). Then I put the other skate on the coping and let myself drop, lifting the rear foot, so that I won't do a hang-up. Works well and is gentle with the materials.

 Hi Lisa,

We're not so lucky here in Ontario. The snow has finally come. I can't complain too much. I got to skate outdoors up until December 19 this year, 3 weeks longer than last year.
I'm 43 and have been skating since I was 20, kind of a late start. I wouldn't skate without stoppers now since it has become a natural reaction to me to stop with my toes. On the rare ocassion I go ice skating I have to remember to stop with my foot, not my toes (crash).

I too use a lot of recycled parts. Luckily this christmas my buddy Freddy B in North Carolina sent me 3 sets of stoppers, along with a set of wheels and bearings. They should keep me going for a while.

Regarding your parts collection, why don't you take an inventory of it, take a picture and post an ad on e-bay. I'm sure somebody out there would want it.
