NYC writer's opinion: Olympic Skateboarding?
: I definitely think skateboarding is worthy enough to be an olympic sport. A lot of people would think the skaters were selling out, but I think it would be cool. I think it would be a great way for skaters all over the world to get together and skate with each other. I think it would be really cool to have only non pro skaters. This would give so many skaters the chance to have their travel and expenses paid for to meet up with others from all over the world. I don't think the interest would be there, but I would be into it. If snowboarding can be an olypic sport than skateboarding could be as well. Shit, let's get vertical rollerskating as a sport. There are so few of us that we all could represent our countries and have them pay for us to travel and skate together. I would not care about how I placed, but would love hanging out with you all.
:
If it goes Olympic, it will be staged like snowboarding...halfpipe, downhill racing (skateboarding luge), mega ramp. The issue will be with street skaters, they will be excluded. Olympic events are very strict, we all know this, but I agree that all disciplines should have their due exposure, so why not. I'd like to see it happen, regardless of how it is represented. I don't think that Olympic snowboarding competitions represent all of snowboarding and it won't for skateboarding either. There are plenty of other venues for ledges and rail sliding. :-)

i like this sentence:
For those three or less left that skate as adults do so because of a passion or love, not because of an obligation or an expectation. They skate regardless of sponsorship, money, or status. That may not be the case if skateboarding became on Olympic sport or have a value put on it.

well, thats why i love rollersk8n! freedom of creativity, do it out of love/passion. tired of trying to conform or compete against a "status quo." thats what burnt me out of running. freedom + lack of pressure = FUN

of course i choose rollersk8n over sk8boarding, more freedom, more fun.

A very good essay. At first Matthew Allison discusses the issue if skateboarding should be in the Olympics from the view of skateboarding (I think we can imagine roller skating in a similar space). In those parts of his essay, i always kept thinking: "Skating is not the issue, the Olympics is!" To me, the Olympics in themselves are the biggest reason why I do not want to be part of it. Where have the original Olympic ideals gone? Today, I only see a big commercial event where money is the only thing that counts and the athletes are used to further this goal. They are selected at a young age and prepared and trained to participate in the Olympics. Where is their freedom? I think the best way to deal with stuff like the Olympics would be to just ignore it. Then it would go away. But I'm pretty sure that a substitute would soon emerge. The Romans had "bread and circuses" we have "beer and soccer". You probably can't escape it. I'd rather practice a little skating myself. I can understand the craving for recognition. But by whom? I'd rather be accepted by fellow roller skaters. I know that it would be futile to expect respect for my skating which isn't worth mentioning. But almost always I had a very warm welcome and acceptance by other roller skaters. I want to thank you all for this and don't kill me for not liking the Olympics. Matthew Allison explains very well in his his last paragraph what's important about skating:

My last reason that skateboarding should not be in the Olympics is probably the most abstract one, and has to do with the essence of the sport. In the recent documentary ‘The Man Who Souled the World’ about Steve Rocco and his impact on the sport a commentator, named Fletcher Dragge, near the end stated something worth thinking about. Basically that skateboarding got big and to a degree ruined because people have gotten involved in it to make money not because they love it. I think every skateboarder remembers the day he or she discovered it or when he or she became passionate about it. It was a very independent decision. Parents do not show up one day with a skateboard and planned lessons. A skater becomes a skateboarder by him or herself, and not by an outside influence. With the Olympics talent is spotted at a young age and then pushed on the athlete by parents and coaches. I hope I never live to hear about a five year old in China or Russia being taken away from his or her home to train to be an Olympic skateboard champion. This happens to gymnasts and with other Olympic sports. Skateboarding is such an individualistic sport, and part of personal discovery no one should be forced to do it. Let’s say ten nine year-olds start skating at the same time. By the time they reach thirteen, at least four of them will quit because lack of interest or ability. By age sixteen three or more will quit because of lack of interest or teenage pressures. For those three or less left that skate as adults do so because of a passion or love, not because of an obligation or an expectation. They skate regardless of sponsorship, money, or status. That may not be the case if skateboarding became on Olympic sport or have a value put on it.

Funny,I've never wanted to dominate my friends,,or anyone for that matter and like most sports, the olympics are all about that.I always looked at comps as a big sesh with my mates and never realy got fired up or nervouse about it and that is the part that I do dig about comps,,everyone travels to session big together and seeing as this years MOSS jam is looking to be a jam format based around a bowl/ramp/drain tour posibly with prody/prizes given out for best trick/gnarliest slam ect, rather than "THE BEST SKATER",me and everyone else I've talked to about it are pretty dammed stoked about it.
Funily enough MOSS jam 08 had these realy cool trophies made up of steel cut out in the shape of Frankston bowl with MOSS in the centre, mounted on a concrete coping block,,rad as fuck, and I realy wanted one and realy did'nt enjoy the comp as much cos I was set on gettin one.Kinda stupid realy as me and Ludi were the only rollerskaters there and there were 2 trophies for that any way,and I managed to pick up one for second place in a skateboard division any way.
Anyhoo, thats my perspective.I recon theres plenty among the skateboard comunity who want to dominate(it seems to be part of the package these days) and who would want to do the olympics thing and good luck to them.I'm sure they would pull a huge audience and I'd watch it too,I can't walk away from watching any skate footage,I love it.

cheers joe

: Funny,I've never wanted to dominate my friends,

That's something I value myself very much: The almost complete absence of domination in skating. I can remember one roller skater whom I would describe as someone who wanted to dominate, but I can't say this about the rest. Well, this guy even hindered me physically with his elbow from dropping in while in a practice session! I met noone else like this in roller skating, however. But I heard of quite some guys in inline skating during the peak of the hype who would behave in a similar way. This is another reason why I am afraid of roller skating become a hype thing. I fear this would attract the wrong type of people. Better fewer of us than having the wrong people around.

: rather than "THE BEST SKATER",

Seconded. There is no "BEST SKATER".

: Funily enough MOSS jam 08 had these realy cool trophies made up of steel cut out in the shape of Frankston bowl with MOSS in the centre, mounted on a concrete coping block

Bernhard, u are already recognized! u r listed as a vert sk8r on the internet. i on the other hand might gain recognition as the girl w/ the broken arm lol. my running days w/ boxes of metals is now a forgotten has-been where i felt even at the time never good enough nor satisfied by what I accomplished and my painting days will amount to little, maybe only after I die. when painting became a stress for income, that stopped being fun too so for me i would never want to be an olympian. I'm cool being just the best crippled sk8r i can be even if no recognition is given. i was happy being accepted among the sk8boarders. i'll just be proud now to do and accomplish anything at this point. being at the top is fleeting and unfulfilling as someone will always better u. i dont enjoy organized sports as its restrictive but it would be nice to watch sk8n on TV. i just hope one day to be able to afford to attend rollin w/ other rollersk8rs. all the vert sk8rs on this forum are my sk8n heros/heroines! brian may still be the best vert sk8r listed (i guess there isnt listings now) but i would rather sk8 w/ u or Irene or any other sk8r on this forum any-day as for me u guys are personally more recognized.

as far as money goes, rich people arent satisfied either. once phelps isnt the best anymore, i'm sure he'll crash. and when i get old i will be happy in my full body brace and pads rolling somehow lol.

i suppose its true what they say, however bad things seem theres always someone worse off.

: your not on your own there. today we planted our welder workmate at the bone orchard. wayne only made it to 39 1/2. well short changed in my opinion. he had been crook for 12 months and passed away on sunday. i feel sad for his wife and 2 young daughters. well we saw him off properly, i even had some giggle juice. im sure ill cheer up again by the w/end.
: i suppose its true what they say, however bad things seem theres always someone worse off.
: stay cool, cheers, h .

sorry bout ur mate! i hear this here too. my mom hasnt helped me once since my last surgery since she is busy since her friend has cancer and that is more important. and before that a friend had 2 family members die. my father and brother havent even asked how i was doing, etc. so this doesnt help. not looking forward to next surgery. if it doesnt heal and they amputate my arm not sure how i can work. i guess i should be happy then, will have to be just a one arm sk8r for a living and my family can get rich when i die off my one arm paintings.

I hope they didn't threaten to amputate your arm?

I believe we all hope very much that your arm finally gets well again!

This is a very sad story. And still you manage to have a positive outlook and some encouragement to offer. Thank you for that.

i donno at this point. bone in center is gone, its black, it died, was told this by someone else. right now guess insurance delaying 2nd surgery. delaying makes things worse. lots of sharp shooting pains now w/ stimulator so maybe good, maybe not.

Ok, so those bone fragments have been resorbed by your body. My physiotherapist once said that the body resorbs everything it doesn't need, except fat. Probably the gap was too big. The shooting pain could mean that newly grown bone has to displace some flesh. I'm not sure about it but can hardly imagine that the process would be completely pain free.

I hope the insurance company does not further delay. They already did enough damage (well, the first part of the damage was done by you. Like me with my knee injury, I waited too long before I went to see a doctor and then I chose the wrong one at first). Keep on communicating with your doctor and don't stop till you are confident that the necessary steps have been taken.

i delayed 1st time due to lack of insurance. i think it died since maybe my body rejected cadaver graft. if so it should work w/ my own graft. then they delay on treatments now. i hope i can vote in nov. because i want change in medical insurance!! i dont know what i can do to help. i am having glum days now and become apathetic eating healthy. i want to roll at the rink. but i am not sure if i can put my speed sk8s together w/ one hand or if it would cause worse problems. i feel rather useless. i have a phone interview tomorrow and i hope this job is a phone job. its as a communication specialist. trying for an area that more talk then action now.

I'm definitely not into vodka. I only reluctantly drank it when in St. Petersburg in 1995 because I didn't know what the Russians would do to me if I didn't.

In Russia, you has a glass of vodka in one hand and a glass oj juice in the other. And to further eliminate the awful taste of the vodka, it had to be cooled to a very low temperature.

im not out of the woods yet, x ray revealed left clavical not rejoined properly. go back in 6 weeks and see if its healed fully. if not ill get it plated. worst case scenario would be, have stack and sharp bit pokes out of shoulder. i have been sk8ting accordingly and will try to roll the other way should i need to.

wish i could be quiet. i have to fight w/ the insurance company nonstop it seems, fight w/ the housing commissions, fight w/ apt. manager (they were nice tho!), fight w/ social worker, fight w/ drs.. fight w/ nurse to get knee brace paid by insurance since they wont sell braces from europe suddenly since our dollar isnt worth much. but now looks like i will get 3 surgeries at once next month, arm/hip one and my right knee so i can finally have SOME quality of life. i told my dr, in tears today i need either 2 good arms or 2 good legs because im miserable now. i cant do anything PLEASE???? so now he is getting the mri and work w/ arm dr. to do surgeries together. he said my knee will heal 100% so i want to get good knees at least. i told him if i can run and jump again, i will smile again. then the nurse found a discontinued knee brace for me. my rent went down this month. tomorrow i will fight w/ car insurance to get it lowered since im not driving. im sure noone wants to hear my lame battles now w/ all these money hungry people. i just want them to hurry up w/ the surgeries so i can chill a couple weeks then live life again. and then i can get on the free state medical insurance, the day i can bolt, jump off the sidewalk and run down the street crazy happy will be a great day. thats all i want for xmas now. i want to roll by easter please.

: :
: wish i could be quiet. i have to fight w/ the insurance company nonstop it seems, fight w/ the housing commissions, fight w/ apt. manager (they were nice tho!), fight w/ social worker, fight w/ drs.. fight w/ nurse to get knee brace paid by insurance since they wont sell braces from europe suddenly since our dollar isnt worth much. but now looks like i will get 3 surgeries at once next month, arm/hip one and my right knee so i can finally have SOME quality of life. i told my dr, in tears today i need either 2 good arms or 2 good legs because im miserable now. i cant do anything PLEASE???? so now he is getting the mri and work w/ arm dr. to do surgeries together. he said my knee will heal 100% so i want to get good knees at least. i told him if i can run and jump again, i will smile again. then the nurse found a discontinued knee brace for me. my rent went down this month. tomorrow i will fight w/ car insurance to get it lowered since im not driving. im sure noone wants to hear my lame battles now w/ all these money hungry people. i just want them to hurry up w/ the surgeries so i can chill a couple weeks then live life again. and then i can get on the free state medical insurance, the day i can bolt, jump off the sidewalk and run down the street crazy happy will be a great day. thats all i want for xmas now. i want to roll by easter please.

hang in there, youll get through all this.
good to see your piping up, remember the squeaky wheel gets the oil. be affirmative not meek.
as frank once said, the meek shall inherit nothing.
most importantly, keep your sense of humour.
cheers, h .

biffsk8er: NYC writer's opinion: Olympic Skateboarding? (3. Feb. 2009 00:16)
 Isn't that called Rollercon? :Þ ~

I think that it IS worthy of the Olympics. I also think that the current Olympic system is NOT worthy of the world's people. It is one big butt kissing political crap-fest! It no longer represents the ideals of what the Olympics should represent.

And television coverage of the Olympics here in the U.S. is a travesty. They spend more time hyping the Olympics, and then they only show you the bits and pieces that they choose to show you. It is ALL about the money and the power.

: Shit, let's get vertical rollerskating as a sport. There are so few of us that we all could represent our countries and have them pay for us to travel and skate together. I would not care about how I placed, but would love hanging out with you all.

Thanks for the positive comments on my skateboarding essay. Bernard's comment really made my day. I'm so vain that on different google variations of my own name I found this forum.
I think the olympics should be up for debate and there are valid reasons for both sides of the issue. The main technicality I have with it is the standardization. I think people should skate 4 foot ramps, 20 foot ramps, and street. There's so much skating out there, that it shouldn't be put in three or so competitions. Bernard thanks for quoting that paragraph so everyone in the forum could read it. I think that it is an indivdualistic sport. I remember the first time I saw a skateboard and starting a year later in 87' or so.
I noticed another thread on here of injuries. My knee is injured too and all I can think of is skateboarding.
The last thing is I've seen a roller skater at a New York City park and she looks like she is having so much fun and rips. So I have respect for your sport, I'd probably do a split and pull my groin if I attempted rollerskating.
Take care,
Matt Allison

 Hey Matt,

cool that you found our little discussion of your essay out of sheer vanity. Who doesn't look up his name on a search engine on occasion?

I'm flattered that you liked my rant. If the woman you saw in New York City was skating a ramp or a bowl then most likely she was Irene.

 Bernhard,
I saw her a couple of summers back on the hudson park with the mini ramp and bowl. She was flying on the bowl. I would simply drop in and lose my speed after a few kickturns. But that park is really chill, people of all levels and not much attitude.
Thanks for reading my article,
Matt

I completely agree with the article. As much as I'd like to see our sports (skate boarding and extreme skating) in the olympics, it would diminish them for what they truly should be : Individualistic expression

Mass packaging of these sports will destroy that.
