frontstance falling forward
Sorry if this is another lame question, but coming down a ramp, if I fall forward, is it best to land on elbows first like I did or should I try to twist to roll over my shoulder like the unicyclists do? Or is that only good on flat ground?

One more question. I'm not digging the short glove. Think taking the rigid rear support would make the hired hands OK? I'm not going to land on them really, but otherwise if I touch the ground, my skin scraps off easily off my knuckles. Seems like that would prevent extreme hyperextension w/out the rigid guard pushing on the bones. I feel like a dork now getting the PD if they wont work well on the ramps. I guess they are good for street or no?

Hey Claudine! As to falling, I HIGHLY recommend going to your knees 1st, then, if necessary, your elbows/wrists. I TRY to knee slide outta EVERYTHING that I can't roll away from.I wou;d not counsel any twisting when falling though.

OK, guess I need to practice leaning back all the time when I hit my knees as sometimes when I lean forward the force is still going forward. OK, practice I guess lol and I think I forgot to bend my knees enough then lol. Its been almost a year since I rode ramps so I have to remember some basics again as lame as this sounds. The rink riding is very different then ramp riding and body position is different.

Thanks so much Jay!

I don't really know how to fall myself. I don't fall very often, but when I do, I always fall backwards on my hip, elbow, and head.

I hope someone makes a lame video for us dumb old people that cant fall properly lol. Usually I fall a zillion times and since I'm light I never hurt myself. I only hurt myself if its over a 5 foot fall and I'm going very fast or its over a 5 foot drop. Thats why I said the smaller bowls are OK for me I think but I dont get falling.

No Prob. Practice falling to your knees & then knee sliding. Just try to keep your shoulders over your knees & you should be able to kinda "steer" yourself with your hips as you fall/slide. Good Luck.

I bail and eat a lot and nearly always to one knee and forward skate,,works for me.The answer is definately knees.Any form of trany skating(were they actualy wear pads),they always bail to the knees.Thats why most wear knee pads and a helmet,,pads for bails and helmet for fuckups.

cheers joe

It really depends on the fall. But, try to never fall to your hands unless you have to do so. Always fall to your elbow pads when you can. And even better, fall to knee pads at the same time. You'll slide around feeling like a turtle, but you'll be safe.

On the odd occasion you pitch forward while twisting, slide on your shorts. You'll rip them up, but your bum can take more punishment than your arm. Just wear thick shorts.

Also, I try to never fall to my hands. If I use them at all, it is more like a slap or push to get my body onto my pads. NEVER stiff arm the ramp / ground. You'll break an arm that way. Always have your elbows bent when you have to use that arm!

Cheers!

P.S, I've said it before, and I'll say it again....a trampoline is also a great teacher on how to fall, roll, and how to generally deal with heading toward the Earth gracefully.

No trampoline here. But should I practice sliding on knees in bowl w/ shoes only first? Put ducttape on? Today is the only day due to training at work and homework I can possibly go to the bowls. Then its Fri and it might be too late.

That's not a bad idea at all. It's difficult when no one is around whom you can imitatate and who gives comments on how you do.

Well since I'm getting trained this week, if I dont go today, cant until Fri due to work/school as its 40+ mins drive away, Wed its rain all day too. But I might not have insurance then. It stopped raining but still wet and I have a lot of homework to do. So hopefully if it cant be done today, my friend can help me on Friday. I just will have to pray I still have insurance then! I could practice mounting on my uni as I almost have that. And turns so soon I hope to have a simple video on that at least. ;-D

I'd say it would be better to just do it with skates on, unless you would feel more comfortable doing it with shoes on. Everyone has their own learning curve, so no one answer is right.

Also, just for a second opinion, I almost never slide exclusively on my knee pads. I tend to always drop to all fours (knee and elbow pads). You might want to try both ways to see what works best for you. Also, try sliding out fakie and forward. Run up a ramp and 180 to slide down forward. Run up the ramp and and just lay down to slide out fakie.

Good luck training!
