The Internet Archive collects scanned books which are out of copyright and in the public domain and makes them accessible to everyone. There are often classics hard to obtain elsewhere. The Walrus Magazine has a nice article on this project also mentioning some example books.

 Hi all,

in order to better keep spammers at bay (and to lessen my workload deleting spam) I have added the reCAPTCHA service to the forum entry form. It makes it slightly less inconvenient to post messages but it also makes it far less likely that you have to endure spam.

A CAPTCHA is an acronym für Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. It works by requiring you to decipher a distorted text which an automated OCR program hopefully fails at.

One nice twist with reCAPTCHA is that they use this input to help digitize books. Another one is that the site still stay accessible even for blind users since it also can provide audio challenges.

I hope reCAPTCHA isn't too hard on you. Otherwise, let me know and we will see what we can do.

: So War again bots is started!!!!!

War on bots has started several years ago for the roller skating form. I think I achieved quite a lot with filtering techniques. Without them I couldn't have left for Oz with a clean conscience. ;-) But now reCAPTCHA blows the rest of those evil spam bots to smithereens (hopefully)!

: Bots are banned by .... reCAPTCHA bot ? and more time to skate for you, that is cool !!!!

To be honest, fighting spam never kept me from skating. Rather from posting. ;-)

: ... hey what about Rskating bots?

Claudine posted a video of one.

Yes, I really liked that, too. Not that I believe there are many blind people visiting this forum but I think they should be able to make the maximum of it.

The reCAPTCHA is a little too hard to read, and the audio was not at all what the words that were written. I had t refresh to new words just so that I could read it. Also, is it possible to make it just one word each time instead of two??

That's so it can't be read by computer but only by smart roller skaters. And the audio is just a new challenge which has nothing to to with the visual one.

Not with reCAPTCHA. It presents one word it knows for sure and another one which hasn't been properly recognized by an OCR program. The first word is used to gain trust in you and the second I like to imagine as payment for the service. Incidentally, we profit from the second challenge too, when we download the scanned books.

Check. Works not only with blind people but also with deaf ones. ;-)

It has to be something cool when it takes me that many years to accept a solution ...

Well, we had no spam since the introduction of reCAPTCHA.

Btw, I like the way you linked the Walrus site directly to the reCAPTCHA article.
