How has your skating changed?
I still havent been able to get back into it full swing since my injury. Most of it is fear. In my head I already decided I wont try anything really new until August, one year after they gave me bones that looked like swiss cheese. I just roll around for now, with a big splint on. :-(

The reason is that I found out one of the stupid drugs the medical field thought would help me actually slows down bone turnover rate and takes many years to get out of your system. This is what HAS to happen for bones to get hard and strong again after they break. Its called remodeling. So now I know that our pharmaceutical companies do more harm then good and have to exude patience. I figured a year should be "safe" I hope.

I'm going to be like Robert, learn to carve well to start and stick with the smaller stuff til I feel more comfortable. Sorry, no flips for me, ever. Come August, I will be skating DAILY I hope and SLOWLY progressing. If I dont feel up to par, right now I dont skate because I'm chicken I havent found an orthopedic dr. that takes state insurance yet, a big issue.

Other part for me is money, cant afford driving much, it sucks. So I havent driven to the bowls lately. Waiting on getting some income.... I honestly dont feel comfortable in the kiddie park across the street.

I guess we all have skated during different times and have had different conditions. I was in my prime as a very young guy in 1982. During the years after, I did not have much to skate so it was off and on for many years. I could go 5 years off and still show up at a ramp and do my old tricks. I got back into skating in college and pretty much got back everything in 1992. After taking 16 years off, it seemed my body did not adapt. I broke my elbow four months into it and have been gradually progessing, but never got back the old stuff. My style of skating has changed so much. I was a back and forth skater that did tricks on every wall. Now, I have adapted for my lack of tricks and carve and grind. I used to get frustrated, but now I focus on finding new lines and carving fast. I know I still have the old tricks, but my broken elbow seems to get in the way. I am stoked lately because I am finding new lines and carving faster. I just learned a couple of new tricks on the small stuff, but wonder if I will ever get the big tricks back? Have any of you changed the way you skate? If I could get the old stuff back and incorporate the new stuff, then I would be totally stoked. If not, then I will carve and have fun.

 i'm hearing you.
seems to me as the years roll on, the skill level reduces slightly.
if you can hold the bag o tricks you have and are having fun, that in itself is rewarding.
i too have become slightly timid since my collarbone misshap.
just keep giving it your best shot.
my kids/grand kids tell me i'm the worlds oldest teenager,
that makes me very happy.
happy rolling one and all.

I've lost one trick. I'll get it back soon. So far, I have progressed more every year. Still progressing. Maybe I'm the fluke?

Biff, did you take a significant amount of time off from skating? I am actually stoked to even be doing it again. When I first got back into skating, I literally could barely stand on my skates. Glad to hear you have kept your tricks.

I left skating three times because of serious injuries. Once for two years, once for a year, and lastly for about 5 months. I have also taken bits of time off from smaller injuries, like swelling, etc..

During my years of vert skating, I have had some dry spells due to the lack of a skate park near me. I've gone at least months not skating, if not a year before, because of not having a skate ramp.

Roughly, I'd say that I have skated about 16 of the last 21 years.

My skill level is maybe 1/4 of what it was at my best but I attribute that to a 30 year break and 40 years in the construction trade. At my age going in circles at the local roller rink would be an anomoly not to mention a session at the local sk8park. With the encouragment of my #1 son and with his help, patience and support I'm back on 8 wheels again. My break from vert skating was an economic decision and nothing more really contributed to my being off my quads for over 30 years. Any broken bone resulted in a loss of income from cast on to cast off and we still needed groceries ever week whether I was broken or not. While I am very active for someone on Social Security- baseball, golf, handball, sk8s and assorted occasional physical fun - my body simply refuses to do what it could 40 years ago (Go back in the forum and look at my quasi-backflip into the foam pit for verification) the pure joy I get from vert skating remains the same, perhaps even a tad higher because one appreciates the light a little more when darkness begins to fall. Never give up....never surrender!
