I rolled around the 10.5 foot bowl today!
: Wow, sounds like you are really kicking ass. Between the rain and just laziness I have not skated for a couple of weeks. I really want to get my plate situation resolved. I personally find these new bowls to be really hard for rollerskating. I don't like coping sticking way out and I hate these really short trannies that go from vert to flat in a matter of a second. I have recently learned there are a few parks out there with 8 ft bowls. I think I want to try to skate something a little more mellow so that I can do my tricks. I was at the mall yesterday to see a movie and stopped by the Vans park. That ramp is friggin huge and has at least two feet of vert. The combi bowl looks pretty brutal as well. Looks fun, but I am just not ready for that shit.
:
I love the vert ramp there at Vans, rode it a coupla times w/the LA crew. The combi scares me still. If you check out BNW's vid, you see he's killin' it.

Didnt drop in but I let myself down and rolled around. That bowl in Greenbelt is AMAZING! There are these subtle curves that you dont see that really feel amazing when you ride them. There is one that launches you up in the air an inch or so and its so much FUN. I'm just not ready to do vert yet dropping in. Theres about a 1 1/2 feet of vert dropping in and the coping extends over the bowl an inch. I dropped in the deep end of the small bowl today, it was just mental, but its not yet vert. I'm scared lol!

The vert skateboarders are the best. I couldnt walk up with my toe stops since they slipped but they gave me a truck to help me out. :-D I guess there are no really grippy toe stops? Cause I would love to roll around in the big bowl more but at 71/2 to 8 feet at the drop in, kinda hard for a shorty to get out lol. Wow that was fun, I'm in TROUBLE now lol.

I also got a handplant down, twisted around mostly with landing my feet but only getting my body up 45 degrees. So I have a ways to work up to looking good. I might try 2 places tomorrow because since I get incredible speed dropping in the deep end and I fly over the coping, I want to start working on grabs and 1 foot 50-50s.

I rode the gizmos, 58mm 97a. They didnt feel really any harder/less grippy. But they didnt leave me much room to my sliders and felt a touch slower. I think 59-60mm works best for me unless I lower my sliders. I wasnt as fond of the square design. I find carving easier with more curved corners. So far the cockroaches are my favs, but I think now I would also like the type-s! Same shape but lighter and a touch harder.

: I guess there are no really grippy toe stops?

The Kryptonics toe stops are sufficiently grippy to me. Seems to me that they are made of the same PU they use for their 78A wheels. I use their toe stops on my ramp skates and on my street skates and I am very happy with them.

Except for the coping, its an amazing bowl. The drop is too steep for me. Over a foot of vert terrifies me. I need to do 6.5 feet, 7, etc. work my way up. Otherwise I might have a heart attack dropping in lol.

But with pool coping too, that would be hard to slide on since there are in pieces with gaps between them. The actual subtle curves of the bowl feel incredibly amazing. Give me a year or two, I will learn it. I think for sidestance, dropping in this way would be easier. But I'm sticking to being a parallel skater.

No improvements today. My legs were tired, not sure why. I find doing tricks takes a lot more out of me. I need to do some squats, lunges, sit ups and handstands during the week so I can get some power. I think this will be my downfall. Irene is so amazing with her power! I'm just agile.

I didnt manage any grabs yet. Still getting used to the speed from the deep end drop in. I tried a real truck grind and didnt get it with the extra speed. I tried harder 98a wheels. Loved them but if I didnt land everything perfectly, I will totally slip and slide out. I think those are too hard. Thanks again Irene!

Robert, I might have to lay low skating during the week. My knee still hurts. Just not with the bowl skating. Its tendonitis. Not sure why it hasnt healed yet. I wish I could do jumps, but that hurts.

Yes, I am! But also determined lol. Some days its below freezing and I still go if the bowls are dry. :-D Those days I might be the only one out there. Today it was a unseasonably warm day, 50F, there were about 40 skaters there! I skated with 2 girl skateboarders too. Most the kids stick to the street course. There were a dozen vert skaters in the big bowl. So that gave me plenty of time in the little bowl.

Where do I get the kryptonics? Are they small or big cause I cant do truck grinds if the stopper is taller then my trucks. But if I can get myself out, I would just lower myself in the big bowl more often if there isnt anyone up there. I was totally tired when I skated it otherwise I would have tried to pump out some too. I can now see myself doing vert, one day!

Maybe Rollergirl or Skates On Haight has them ...

Have a look at my old how to. The stopper you can see on those pics is already a bit worn down, but you should be able to get an impression.

You are so crazy! But it's good to hear that you can skate while working on your new job.

These are my skates now except I also added toe guards to them since I'm killing my toes doing the handplants. I've sewed in snug ties to them too lol. You can sort of see by the small stoppers on them that the tip is just below my trucks. When I had the bell ones on, when I hit a truck grind, it would hit the stopper too and that would throw me into the bowl. Thats why I asked! But I could take my sandblaster and sand it down? I donno what those are called lol.

I wish I could skate more, but with the snow, ice, night classes once a week and extra homework and work in the evenings, I only get 1-2 days in during the week. I need to do other exercises to get stronger cause now that I'm doing tricks, I find my body tires quick. I also find that in the big bowl, it takes a lot more strength! I am finding now that I'm older, I seem to need more sleep (4 hrs doesnt cut it now). But my work is 15 mins away so I still skate and will a bunch come April/May!!

My coworker is talking me into some motorcross classes. Sounds like fun, but the money, plus I'm not sure if anything compares to skating. Trying to find a second sport to do on these ugly days, and one that uses different muscles so I can still have fun on days I cant skate. I seem to be too lazy to "exercise" but not to skate my legs off lol.

I understand. You've got really small stoppers. Which reminds me that there used to be some roller skaters who sawed off a piece of their stoppers. There are also some roller skaters who don't use stoppers at all.

For me, my motorbike is strictly for transport purposes. I mainly use it to get to ramps where it si very inconvenient to get to by public transport.

Hi Ludi,

why do you prefer this solution to using normal stoppers? Or are they just hard to get?

Public transport? Here, a 15 min. drive would take me 2 hrs lol. I wish......
I dont want a bike for road though. Seen too many death crashes! Or if the person lived, they would wish they didnt make it. I was just thinking I would love to do something fun with another female too. I pretty much hang with the guys all the time now.

I'm checking into stoppers. I wont go without them now! I like the idea of getting out of the bowl and it makes life much easier stopping. My wheels are too hard even at 96a to be of much use with the t-stop and they are so useful I'm finding in many ways.

Yes, public transport seems to be pretty bad in the US. Probably one of the reasons why they don't want to join the Kyoto protocol. I had a rental car myself when I was in the US in 2004.

: I dont want a bike for road though. Seen too many death crashes! Or if the person lived, they would wish they didnt make it.

I had quite some crashes but it doesn't keep me from riding my bike. I didn't crash my current bike, however, and I hope to keep it that way. The worst that happened to me was a broken thumb.

: I was just thinking I would love to do something fun with another female too. I pretty much hang with the guys all the time now.

You are quite the lucky girl. For me, its mostly skating alone. When the weather will permit it again and when my bike will start again (probably needs a new battery).

But you could do hockey stops with your slippery wheels! Is quite a funny thing but has a big danger for generating flat spots.

I love hockey stops! But sometimes a nice slow down is good or a bounce off the bowl. :-D

Heres the bike I think I would have fun with!

I really like the skateboarders, esp. the vert skateboarders. Now I dont feel out of place even though I'm definately different. Its really a different experience then when I skate with inliners and street skaters.

I shouldnt complain but I dont get to hang with many female friends nowadays. As a kid there was always a girl that was a tomboy like me!

All those girls sold their souls to derby and now they dont have time for REAL fun. OK, I'm biased! I'm also not a contact sport person.

I wonder, could I ride that bike to work too? Its about 6 miles away and side roads so it would be fast enough. Then I would save money on gas! We talked about motorcycles all during lunch today lol. Now I really want one and I would sell my car, just I'm afraid to ride a motorcycle on the highway which I would need to for skateparks and my animals need bails of hay and big bags of bedding.

So what do you carry your skating stuff in? I would need a big bag for all my skating stuff and food for two lol. I get hungry!

Not that many derby girls over here in Germany. But I could imagine this to be fun. I've never actually seen roller derby action, however.

This bike probably isn't suited very well to transporting stuff. My bike is much better in this respect. I've got two suit cases on its sides (I can put a helmet or something of similar size in it) and it has room for two persons to sit on it.

I've got a very big skating bag where I can also put my camera bag into. Gets very heavy then, so I somtimes leave the camera equipment at home. I strap this bag to the bike behind me.

Roller derby to me looks like roller football. They roll around a tight track and knock each other down and the jammer tries to pass to get points. No tricks, ramps, etc. But its fun to watch! Its really great to see so many roller skaters. :-D The girls are pretty tough and the game I saw they were pretty good skaters too. But I'm not into hitting or getting hit so its not for me. I also crave curved surfaces and like doing tricks. ;-D

I think a bike is out of the question financially since I kinda need a car too. I do want to save money and skate with other roller skaters one day so I cant do everything. And skating will rank #1 in my book. But I might put knobbies on my mountain bike and take it on some trails or take that to work. So I would need a good bag to take my skating stuff and food for the day! Maybe I can play like my car isnt doing well and get a ride from my coworker lol? I havent skated this week cause I'm working extra, too much work to do. But my knee feels OK for once! So maybe taking some time off during the week on occassion is good?
